Pour on tap at the brewery, hazy dirty copper/amber with thin to no off white head, aroma brought notes of caramel, toffee, some nice fruity notes, slight grassy pine, hints of anise, slight heat. Taste is bitter grass and spice right away into bread, caramel, dark fruits with some booze notes, hints of slight bittering pine in the finish.

Dark amber in color, clear with a thin head. Nice Barley wine flavor rich and thick flavors. Nice seasoning and a light finish. I like the amount of alcohol. Not bad.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
8/18/12 notes: Draft, brewery. A rather boldly flavored Barley Wine. Sweeps in with pungent toast and red fruit, with a bit of toffee on the nose, followed by a big chewy body and sweeter malt notes through to a long finish. A bit too intense to be English in style, too malty to be stylistically “West-Coast” either. At just 60 IBUs, the malt sweetness is a touch too cloying for my tastes.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the brewery, back in August. Pleasant beer. Sweet toffee, cooked caramel, molasses, and lots of toast. Subtle whiskey-like flavor. Hops were very rich tasting but they weren’t bitter. Hidden alcohol builds slow. Flavorful, balanced and cozy.

On tap at Renegade poured a clear reddish amber with a small lingering amber head. Aromas of carmel, toffee and light fruittiness. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, toffee, light fruittiness and light earthiness with a smooth dry lingering malty finish.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tap at the brewery. Poured a murky brown/copper with an off-white head. Smell is big pine, grapefruit, resin, and citrus. Not much in the way of malt in the aroma. Taste is sweet grapefruit, citrus, and pine, with a big bitter finish. Also picking up some light caramel and brown sugar. Thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Overall, it’s a very tasty beer, but more of a DIPA, than a barley wine.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: MAY 19, 2012 (Note - I believe there has been a recipe change since this beer was first entered, as the board at the brewery listed this at 9.7% abv and 100 ibu - either that or whomever entered the original entered it incorrectly) Tap at Renegade - turbid, almost milky - dark amber pour - seems almost like a Bigfoot clone - very hoppy american barleywine, some some sticky toffee on the approach, light raisin, a bit of plum - middle and finish are all earthy, woody, moderately bitter hops - lacks some depth, but still an enjoyable American b wine.
