8/18/12 notes: Draft, brewery. An interesting beer for sure; begins with freshly ground, nutty coffee. Flavors transition immediately away from coffee and towards something more biscuity, softly malty and with musty wood notes. Overall this beer doesn’t have the mature integration of flavors/aromas that I’d like to see, but a well-worthy experiment.

Unique. Smells of coffee and has a bitter coffee flavor (maybe a bit too bitter). I think the absence of roasted or chocolate malts makes the beer clash a bit with the coffee

Tap. Pours clear copper with a small, fizzy white head, short retention with light lacing. Aroma is coffee, cookie and toast malt with light fruity esters. Flavor is malt dominant with light coffee, light hops and bitterness with a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Tap at the brewery. Poured a copper-like color in appearance with no head. Smell is huge over-roasted coffee, roasted chili peppers, a touch of spice, but not much else. Taste is green chilis, spicy jalapenos, coffee, and yeast; really just a mess and hard to take down. Light mouthfeel with no carbonation. Like a liquid breakfast burrito in a glass. Bleh.

Crushed on tap at Denver Bicycle Cafe. Hazy orange color with hardly any head. Malty, coffee roast on the nose. Medium-bodied with a bit of graininess. Did they put actual beans in the tank? Got a bit of a coffee kick to it, but overall pretty average.

Pour on tap at the brewery, hazy orange-red with white head, aroma brought notes of big roasted coffee bean, hints of slight caramel, and earth, the hops mix with the coffee to give a slight earth, pine, and vegetal note like an unroasted coffee bean, odd. Taste is dominated by roasted wet coffee grounds, some slight earth and the hops mix oddly, some hints of caramel, biscuity tones, finish fairly sweet, coffee doesn’t run through the palate.

on tap-pours amber with an offwhite head. Aroma is coffee, roast. Taste is sweet medium malt-caramel, orange, then coffee. Occasional.

Cloudy orange color that does not look like a traditional coffee beer in appearence. Deffinitely has coffee on the nose. Smooth palate with hints of coffee but also a hint of green pepper. Not too filling. Very unique flavor in a good way.
2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 7/20 onceblind (2536) - Denver, Colorado, USA - SEP 27, 2011
On tap at the brewery. Hazy burnt orange in color with a minimal head. Interesting aroma of mellow coffee with toffee with taco meat. Flavor is odd. Has some coffee beans but with some weird chewy malt backbone that’s sweet with some sort of funky vegetal tone. Earthy and not too sweet, but no real bitterness is there either. I wanted to like this more than I did.

Tap @ brewery. Dark orange appearance with a cream colored head with little head retention. Roasty, dark coffee grounds that mostly mask the other elements of the nose. Roasty, almost burnt, dark coffee ground over a slight piney, sweet malty flavor. The coffee grounds really dominate the flavor and that’s not an attraction in my mind. Not horrible either.
