ucusty (1871), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA May 11, 2008 Dark amber (almost red) with beige to off-white head. A small amount of spotty lacing present. Fresh toast aroma with a twist of hops. Malts, rye and hops dominate the flavor, however I agree with Jrob 21 "overall I think the rye malt holds this one back from being a little more exciting."
desurfer (1067), Pinellas Park, Florida, USA May 8, 2008 Pours a dark amber with a small head. Aroma is mildly malty. Flavor is dominated by a smooth hoppiness with some background rye character. Drinkable but not special. jrob21 (1252), Atlanta, Georgia, USA May 7, 2008 Pours deep red color with almost no head. Faint aroma of rye malt. Some toasted grain and bread like aromas in there as well. Tastes of sweet caramel. Very smooth and easy to drink but lacking an incredible amount of complexity. Faint english style hops on the finish to give a bit of a bitterness. Overall I think the rye malt holds this one back from being a little more exciting. doubleo (1096), San Diego, California, USA May 5, 2008 22oz bottle. Pours a deep red/brown color w/ almost no head. Smells malty, a touch sweet, and a little nutty smelling, peanuts of course. Tastes sweet and malty with some red fruits up front with the spice and hops coming in on the finish. Medium body, nice carbonation. ChainGangGuy (2523), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA May 4, 2008 Appearance: Pours a crystal clear, mahogany body. No real head, though. This is a beer for hope, not for head!
Smell: Aroma full of rye and smelling a bit like mentho-lyptus. Notes of dark toasted caramel and grains.
Taste: Dark caramel maltiness, then toasted breadcrusts, then burnt breadcrusts. Big hit of spicy rye. Very mild sweetness throughout. Hint of citrus. Medium hop bitterness. Growing graininess goes from merely being spicy and starts to get a bit astringent. Overall spicy finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: A fine enough beer when nothing but the spicy taste of rye will suffice. BrewDad (2363), Olympia, Washington, USA May 3, 2008 4oz Taster - Hop Scotch Spring Festival - Seattle, WA
Aroma – Nice rye aroma with a hint of spices in the nose.
Appearance – Reddish brown in color, clear with a nice head.
Flavor – A nice use of rye malts with a hint of spices added for good measure . Liked the build of this beer.
Palate – Great Mouthfeel, good beer texture with a dry finish.
Overall – This was a wonderful beer one of the better beers for the night. I liked the flavors got a hint of spices and the added fruitiness was great.
