COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Teaming up with Terrapin Beer Co. for the first time, Shmaltz Brewing joins the tribe as a production partner for Reunion ’11. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in this venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise finds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).

This year’s beer is a dark, complex ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and chili peppers. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. This brown ale leads with a sweet and subtle spicy aroma. The flavor begins with complex malt overtones and quickly gives way to a chocolate and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss. Just when you thought it was over, the heat from the chilies sneaks in and coats your tongue with tantalizing heat.

Many thanks to all who have supported this project and have helped us honor Virginia’s memory.

Cheers - Pete & Alan

Bomber from Beverages4Less in Santee, CA. Fred’s the man! Trust me on that. Pours very dark brown with a big foamy/creamy light tan head. Aroma is chocolate chili? With light stone fruit? Full body. Creamy carb. Flavor is chocolate/vanilla with some fruit, followed by a slow chili burn. Not a lot of chili heat. Yet, anyway. This is an extremely flavorful, but not excessively extreme, beer. Really good beer.

Bottle @ home. Deep brown appearance with a bubbly, brown head. Toasty chocolate malty, nutty creamy, mild earthy aroma. Creamy, milk chocolate, light toffee, nutty, vanilla, mildly bitter flavor with the chili peppers showing up on the finish. Soft, velvety mouth feel. Nice brew!

Pours clear mahogany with tan head. The aroma offers up some roasted malts, very dark roasted malts, a cola sensation and a mild whiff of vanilla. Smells nice. The taste has rich dark roasted malts, molasses, a mild level of vanilla and a growing and pleasing chocolatiness to midway and into the finish. I like this. It’s smooth, on the rich side and straight up yummy.

Pours dark mahogany into a Sam glass. Off-white head quickly recedes to nothing. Milk chocolate aromas. Upfront chocolate and vanilla turning to a lasting chocolate finish.

22. Pours deep brown with a loose tan head. Loose sheets of lace on the sides. Big brown bread, gingerbread, and molasses nose, very sweet and treacly. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Brown bread, gingerbread, and molasses on the mid palate, with a long sweet finish. Kind of overdone with the holiday treats, but not a bad beer if you have a sweet tooth.

Had both the Terrapin and Shmaltz versions back to back the other night at John’s Apt. Thanks Ryan Dank for sharing. I’ll start off by saying that I’m not a big fan of either. They’re just not my style at all. The beer is grainy as hell. Malt texture is weird. Not great. The red pepper and spice component is more balance is this version than the Terrapin. Spicy without being over the top. Lighter and more drinkable. Not great but not bad either.

Bottle... Poured dark brown with a huge head. Sweet with lots of chocolate flavors. Vanilla bean, oats, malts, nutty. Couldn’t detect much from the chilies. Came off like a suped up brown ale.

Pour is a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is sweet and heavy malts with a bit of chocolate. Flavor is at first a nice chocolate with a little vanilla aftertaste. I don’t get and chili pepper but I’m Ok with that. Finish has some creamy chocolate covered vanilla ice cream. Decent beer for a low price and a good cause.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a clear dark brown color with a medium plus sized tan head that quickly diminishes. The aroma is creamy chocolate with minor amounts of roasted malt and spices. The flavor has creamy chocolate, roasted malts, mild vanilla with a touch of fruit and some earthy bitterness at the finish. This was decent, but not very complex.
