COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Teaming up with Terrapin Beer Co. for the first time, Shmaltz Brewing joins the tribe as a production partner for Reunion ’11. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in this venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise finds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).

This year’s beer is a dark, complex ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and chili peppers. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. This brown ale leads with a sweet and subtle spicy aroma. The flavor begins with complex malt overtones and quickly gives way to a chocolate and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss. Just when you thought it was over, the heat from the chilies sneaks in and coats your tongue with tantalizing heat.

Many thanks to all who have supported this project and have helped us honor Virginia’s memory.

Cheers - Pete & Alan

22 oz. bottle. Pours a clear dark brown color with a medium plus sized tan head that quickly diminishes. The aroma is creamy chocolate with minor amounts of roasted malt and spices. The flavor has creamy chocolate, roasted malts, mild vanilla with a touch of fruit and some earthy bitterness at the finish. This was decent, but not very complex.

UPDATED: OCT 14, 2011 9/24/11. 12oz bottle via Cavie. Dark brown pour with a small tan head that sticks a bit. Sweet chocolate aroma with a touch of some vegetal aspect. Sweet chocolate flavor as well, also a touch of veggies, some vanilla, sweet caramel, and a lingering bitterness. Meh.

22oz bottle from Pick’s poured into a Snifter. Pours black with 2 fingers of frothy dark tan head. Aroma of chocolate with a slight pepper spice. Taste is lightly bitter and lightly sweet...with a nice pepper spice. Tastes like chocolate, vanilla and a nice spicy pepper aftertaste. The pepper really does sneak up on you. Very nicely done. Medium bodied with a thick and creamy texture. Lively carbonation and a long chocolate and pepper finish. Overall, awesome! Something I will absolutely drink again. I’ll be back tomorrow to buy another couple bottles to squirrel away.

Bottle from the Best Damn Beer Shop: Poured a dark brown that was almost black and was topped by a thick gush of rising foam head. In the aroma, a rich and robust scent of dark chocolate combined with roasted down black malts and smells incredibly delicious which is expected if Schmaltz Brewing was involved. As for the flavor, this taste like a mouthful of chocolate whoppers (malted milk/chocolate balls), and has a perfect roast malt profile while also allowing for a taste of chocolate bits. As for the drink, this brew was perfectly carbonated and went down smooth and easy on the palate, but there was an empty finish. What I mean is, it seemed as though the finish didn’t leave behind much of an aftertaste. None the less, this was a delicious dark American strong ale.

Bomber. Poured deep cola brown with a nice, fairly dense cap of khaki head. The aroma picked up sweet cocoa and vanilla with a hint of greener chiles.. very sweet, but enjoyable.. fairly candied. The flavor found a lot more vanilla than anything else at the core.. some molasses and biscuit in there too.. light herbal bitterness and chiles around.. finished with more sweet vanilla and a little black peppery alcohol. Medium-bodied and very sweet on the palate.. enough carbonation to keep it moving.. OK feel and flow. This was a bit too candied and hard to drink a bomber of, but it was tasty.

Black with a light khaki head, pretty big too. Aroma was chocolaty peppers with some mild oak tones. Pretty big palate, coating and complex. I’m getting big tones of deep earthy malt with some cocoa nibbs backing it up. Very light vanilla creeps up just before crushed red pepper chases it away. No real heat spice. Finishes slightly sweet with a little hop bitterness I could have done without. Not really as chocolaty or vanilla-y as I expected. Shame.

Draft. Fruity aromas with some caramel notes. Pours dark brown with a thin white head. Fruity peppery flavors upfront with caramel notes following. Not much of burn but good
