COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Teaming up with Schmaltz Brewing for the first time, Terrapin Beer Co. returns for a third year as a production partner for Reunion í11. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in this venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise finds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).

This yearís beer is a dark, complex ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and chili peppers. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. This brown ale leads with a sweet and subtle spicy aroma. The flavor begins with complex malt overtones and quickly gives way to a chocolate and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss. Just when you thought it was over, the heat from the chilies sneaks in and coats your tongue with tantalizing heat.

Many thanks to all who have supported this project and have helped us honor Virginiaís memory.

Cheers - Pete & Alan

Pours deep mahogany into a tulip. Off-white head with good retention recedes leaving spot lacing to skim surface. Sweet chocolate and vanilla aromas. Thin with sweet dark caramel, toffee and chocolate upfront turning to a mild spicy chili finish.

22oz. Pours a deep dark black/brown, but does let a small amount of light through. Tan head fads rather quickly to merely a thin ring. The nose is certainly the chocolate and some roasted malts with some sugary notes, but a little on the thin side. The taste is sweet dark roasted malts with chocolate and I am picking up a bit of the vanilla mixed in. The chilis are adding a bit of flare and hits the tongue like a bit of spice. Overall, this is a nice offering by Terrapin, but I thought it was a bit thin on packing their normally punch. In saying that, I would certainly take another quickly after finishing this one.

Blah. The commercial description had me drooling but it did not live up to my expectations. Aroma was very weak. Could pick up some dark malt but was very weak. Pour was a nice deep dark brown with a near tan ring for a head. Taste was very disappointing. Was all roasted malt and chocolate in the front. It was very faint and unpronounced. After the swallow there was a slight tingle of the chilies. The nice strong carbonation in the beer makes it difficult to tell if itís the carbonation or the chilies biting the tongue. Slightly roasted chocolate aftertaste. Very boring.

On tap at Proof. Notes: vanilla, christmas, herb, spice, sweet, caramel, brown sugar -- didnít catch any of the chili pepper. Ok, not my fav.

(22oz bottle from Sun Devil). Pours a cola/root beer color with a tan head that shows some lacing. Tiny carbonation bubbles present. Aroma has cocoa, caramel and a touch of vanilla. Taste is sweet chocolate with a bit of roast and some pepper. Medium bodied with an oily texture. Finish is a bit harsh with the roast. This beer has a really nice chocolate flavor, but it seems that it could be a tad bit better integrated. Overall, pretty nice and Iíd gladly try it again.

Bomber pours dark brown/black with slight amber with a medium tan head. Aroma is heavy chocolate, molasses, vanilla, and malt. Taste is weaker then the aroma lets on, Iím finding no chilies or heat. Taste is a let down would have like to see the flavors more pronounced all the way through and some heat.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of sweet malt, mint, raisin and dark fruit. Flavor of some cocoa with sweet fruits, tootsie rolls, molasses. I donít get any heat or maybe just a touch. An odd beer, very sweet malt, and plenty of that chocolate/tootsie roll quality. Of course, I wish it was a bit more complex and the chiles were more prominent. Overall, itís ok, could work on the drinkability component as well. 6/4/7/3/14 [3.4/5]

2nd to rate? Aight. 8/24/11. On tap. Very dark brown pour with a small tan head that sticks around and laces a little bit. Surprisingly mild aroma that reminds of chocolate, caramel, and not much else. Also a surprisingly light flavor - mild caramel and malt flavors with just barely a touch of chocolate and a lingering tingle from the chiles. There could be more of every added aspect, especially the vanilla.

1st rating??!! Bomber from Bev4Less. Pours a clean dark brown, decent finger or two of tan foam, not too dense. Aroma is oddly muted. Some hints of toasty malt and vanilla but nothing too striking. Taste is also a bit muted in the early palate especially. Eventually some vanilla and mocha kick in, and maybe thereís a hint of cayenne at the end (it picks a bit at the tongue) but itís all a bit more muddled than I had hoped. Maybe as it warms it will pick up some continuity. Iíll give it the benefit of the doubt, but even thn itís an average beer among the craft brew crowds.
