COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Teaming up with Schmaltz Brewing for the first time, Terrapin Beer Co. returns for a third year as a production partner for Reunion ’11. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in this venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise finds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).

This year’s beer is a dark, complex ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and chili peppers. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. This brown ale leads with a sweet and subtle spicy aroma. The flavor begins with complex malt overtones and quickly gives way to a chocolate and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss. Just when you thought it was over, the heat from the chilies sneaks in and coats your tongue with tantalizing heat.

Many thanks to all who have supported this project and have helped us honor Virginia’s memory.

Cheers - Pete & Alan

Tasted on 1/12/12 from a capped 650mL bomber bottle purchased at Midtown. Pours a muddy dark brown with a thick beige head that slowly recedes to fairly thick lace, leaving a ton of residue along the inside of the glass. The nose is full of toasted cocoa nibs and vanilla, with additional chocolate and caramel malt, and maybe a hint of cinnamon. The flavor is the same with sweet chocolate and vanilla up front, moving to the toasted and roasted cocoa nibs, and some chili pepper spice starting to kick in. The body is full with a creamy texture, average, but very smooth carbonation, and a long finish that starts off with some vanilla and cocoa, but ultimately finishes with pretty intense chili pepper burn on the back of my throat and belly.

Bottle picked up at SL.... Dark pour decent little mocha colored head.... Funky aroma of some hot spices, chilly and chocolate. Kind of a unique taste.. Sweet chocolate, little malt, some spices... Medium body: Decent but very forgetable. Meh.....

This is one hellofa reunion. Skor bars reunite with mild milky coffee resulting in a massive strong armed off spring rife with dessert beer potential. Watch it. Those chili peppers aren’t apparent in the flavor, but they’ll creep up on you 3/4 through the glass. A juggernaut. May I have another SIR!

Bottle. Reminded me a little of the Jewbalations but not as strong. Dark purple/black color smells of raisins, toffee and cocoa nibs. Taste is the same. Nothing specially out of the ordinary, but not bad.

Bottle. Poured clear dark brown with a large tan head that left some good lacing. Aroma was lots of roasted malt, some caramel, chocolate. Flavor was roasted malt, caramel, chocolate (milk and bitter), touch of vanilla. Chili was muted -- maybe supplied a bit of fruit. Heat slowly built. Carbonation was quite soft, mouthfeel was slightly oily.

22 oz. bottle from SoHo Organic Market in Elizabeth City, NC. Muddy brown pour with a foamy khaki head. Cola-like aroma with sweet caramel malts dominating the nose and hints of floral hops faintly in the background. The flavor is hard to pinpoint although I guess vanilla is the easiest flavor to recognize. It almost comes off as a strong brown ale in trying to compare it to anything. Nothing really jumps out at first but the heat from the chilies does make itself known eventually. Overall drinkable but very forgettable.

Purchased while on vacation in North Carolina. Shmaltz seems to have more influence on this beer than Terrapin. I tend to get some of the same malty flavors I get in some of the Hebrew beers, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The chili heat is well done. Not too overpowering, yet still noticeable. A good beer that might benefit slightly if were a little bit more on the hoppy side.

This one had a deep amber body with a sudsy thick head. Aromas were light yet floral of yeast, vanilla and peppers with some roasted notes as well. Tasted pretty malty upfront, but settled into a mellow cocoa and vanilla aftertaste. Sip by sip revealed a nice spiciness from the peppers. Light drinkable and unique is all I can say here.
