Teaming up with Schmaltz Brewing for the first time, Terrapin Beer Co. returns for a third year as a production partner for Reunion ’11. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in this venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise finds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).

This year’s beer is a dark, complex ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and chili peppers. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. This brown ale leads with a sweet and subtle spicy aroma. The flavor begins with complex malt overtones and quickly gives way to a chocolate and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss. Just when you thought it was over, the heat from the chilies sneaks in and coats your tongue with tantalizing heat.

Many thanks to all who have supported this project and have helped us honor Virginia’s memory.

Cheers - Pete & Alan

Purchased while on vacation in North Carolina. Shmaltz seems to have more influence on this beer than Terrapin. I tend to get some of the same malty flavors I get in some of the Hebrew beers, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The chili heat is well done. Not too overpowering, yet still noticeable. A good beer that might benefit slightly if were a little bit more on the hoppy side.

Bottled: unk A: dark brown with a finger of mocha foams which falls over to a mirrored surface against an opaque base. (3) S: Plenty of cocoa and vanilla, sweet sugary tone similar to a BlackWater Series from Southern Tier. A bit too sweet on the nose. No peppers. Just sweetness. (3.5) T: Lots of cocoa, less sweet than nose. The vanilla is a little less potent than before. Some bitter coffee tones. No peppers. (3) M: Medium bodied with moderate carb and a dry finish. would like a bit more body here. (2.5) O: this beer was forgettable. I was stoked at the listed notes and wish the beer had more thought put into the balance of the adjuncts. Too bad, I like both of these breweries. (3) Serving type: bottle 11-11-2011

My favorite reunion ale from terrapin. Cocoa on the front, and a little heat on the back.

8/06/2011: Schmaltz & Terrapin Reunion Ale ’11... Aroma: Freshly ground espresso; Appearance: Dark cola brown color with an amber hue; opaque; small beige crown. Flavor: Sweet, caramelized malt; milky chocolate hard candy; a splash of vanilla; the chili pepper spice and heat comes through in the finish, but isn’t overdone and is definitely tempered by the vanilla. Palate: Medium-bodied; very smooth and just slightly carbonated. Overall: Wow, very good and extremely drinkable; Schmaltz is definitely under-rated and not known as much as it should be.

1 pt. 6 fl. oz. bottle (ALC./VOL. 7.3%) shared by Jay @ Dutch’s. Thanks Jay! Rating #98 for this beer.

Bottle from Wine Warehouse Charlottesville. Pours coca cola brown with a thin khaki head. Nice vanilla on the nose. Big, big cocoa on the tongue. After this time the peppers have faded butit does have a bit of a vanilla thing on the finish. I wish it hid its alcohol better but it’s otherwise solid.

22 oz. bottle from Root Cellar. Terrapin version; gold foil over the green turtle cap. Pours a deep brown color with some haze to it and a bit of red tint, with a small off-white head. The aroma has chocolate and caramel malts, faint vanilla, dust, and finally some peppery spice. The flavor follows the same pattern; gritty chocolate and caramel up front, with some middle sweetness that gives way to a spicy finish. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation. Not a bad beer.

Drinks something like a Maduro brown infused with about 25 percent of the espresso in a Cubano Maduro and 50 percent of the vanilla in Vanilla Maduro. Held up well to months of aging, which I don’t see the 2012 doing.

This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a large sized head of foamy finely sized light brown colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a semi-opaque light brown colored body and a thick foamy lacing. The aroma was malty. The mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start mediumly tingly at the finish with a lingering hoppy aftertaste. The flavor contained notes of roasted malt burnt malt and hops. Delicious and one I would certainly like to have again.

Draft at the Khyber. Very dark ruby red with a small off-white head. Vanilla beans. Red plums. Vegemite. Cocoa. Mushrooms. Sweet rotting caramel apples. Low carbonation. Medium body. Interesting. Like a younger lighter wee heavy. Unusual. Worth a try.
