COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Teaming up with Terrapin Brewing Co. for the second time, Shmaltz Brewing returns as a production partner for Reunion ’12. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in the venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle to Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise funds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).

This year’s beer is a dark ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and cinnamon. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. This brown ale leads with a sweet and subtle cinnamon aroma. Complex malt overtones quickly give way to a chocolate and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss.

Many thanks to all who have supported this project and have helped us honor Virginia’s memory.

Cheers - Pete & Alan

Dark brown pour with pillowtop light brown head. Nose and flavor is much more pronounced on the cinnamon than the terrapin version. Seems ’fresher’ also. The cocoa is more present on the flavor, as well as some vanilla and hints of tobacco. Creamy body and texture. I liked this one better.

22oz bottle. Deep mahogany with a big foamy light tan head. Aroma of cocoa, cinnamon, vanilla, caramel and mint. Flavor is lots of rich chocolate, caramel, vanilla and some light pie spice. Medium body with average carbonation. This is a really good chocolate beer, lots of chocolate flavor but not too sweet and a nice subtle addition of spices.

Round 3 in my week 1 drinking. This one is special for me as my father had his own battle with multiple myeloma which he has won up to this point. However has greatly change his quality of life. He has been in remission since 2008 thanks to cutting edge pharmaceuticals. Pours deep amber capped by a tan head with great retention. Slight lacing on my glass. Nose of cocoa and vanilla. Mouth starts with a creamy but full body. Vanilla, cocoa, caramel, and faint grass. Wow what a great beer.

A nice surprise. NBlack, huge head. Lots of vanilla and cinnamon in the aroma, plus some chocolate and coffee. Flavor is cinnamon and vanilla, with traditional porter flavors emerging as it warms. Nice stuff.

Deep brown pour with a cream head. Chocolate, syrup, molasses, chewy, and light alcohol. Nice palate, heavy chocolate, fudge, cocoa, syrup, chocolate finish.

Single bottle purchased from Enotica Wine & Spirits in Calgary, AB on 09/07/2012. Colour: Deep dark borwn with brown high rising but quickly vanishing head. Nose: Heaps and heaps of malt mixed with a witches brew of spices including the advertised cocoa, cinnamon but also a touch of cayenne. Swirling brings out a note of cola and increases the presence of cinnamon. Taste: Medium-light sweet, medium-light bitter, light sour. Wow I expected the fat malt and cocoa to make this a sweet treat but it remains very tempered which allows the herbal presence to stand out and the true complexity of the malt to really be dissected. Chewy, complex and heavy - decent enough.

actually quite impressed by this one. An appetizing body coloured purely opaque brown with a light beige head that looks rather soapy. The nose has a beautiful roasted but not overblown malt character. Find notes of dark and milk chocolate as well as the vanilla and a light spiced note...not exactly cinnamon. The first is sweet and mildly bodied for the style. Notes of chocolate and cinnamon come across subtly with vanilla almost not at all. An overall good imperial brown with mild flavorings.

22oz bottle. Large rocky beige head atop cola brown body. Aroma is moderately sweet, milk chocolate, some cinnamon, vanilla. Taste is moderately sweet, chococaramel, light cinnamon. Medium body, low carbonation.

Sampled on draft at the House of 1000 Beers this beer poured a very dark brown color - almost black with nutty highlights and a medium sized foamy tan head that faded quickly and left a bit of lacing. The aroma was vanilla, Dr Pepper, nut and cinnamon toast. The flavor was nutty cocoa, licorice, cola, strong vanilla and faint cinnamon toast. Very long finish of vanilla, cola and cinnamon toast. Moderately full bodied. Odd but interesting.

9/1/12. 22oz bomber from Grassroots. Muddy brown pour with a nice tan head that sticks and laces in spotty sheets. Big chocolate in the aroma with bits of roasted malts and nuts on top of a touch of vanilla sweetness. Sweet chocolate and vanilla in the flavor with a bit of hop bitterness and a definite dusty, tannic, grainy bite that is off putting. I don’t get a ton of the cinnamon, but I suppose there is a bit of a spice bite.
