COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Teaming up with Terrapin Brewing Co. for the second time, Shmaltz Brewing returns as a production partner for Reunion ’12. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in the venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle to Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise funds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).

This year’s beer is a dark ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and cinnamon. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. This brown ale leads with a sweet and subtle cinnamon aroma. Complex malt overtones quickly give way to a chocolate and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss.

Many thanks to all who have supported this project and have helped us honor Virginia’s memory.

Cheers - Pete & Alan

A - Pours a dark brown color with a finger of frothy khaki colored head. The head fades down fairly slowly leaving behind some nice lacing. S - Aroma is a mix of roasted dark chocolate malts, dark fruits, cinnamon, and vanilla with some black licorice and molasses. T - Starts off with a mix of dark chocolate, dark fruits, and some vanilla. Through the middle, the cinnamon comes through with some black licorice, molasses, and a touch of roasted coffee. The finish is a mix of roasted dark chocolate, dark fruits, vanilla, cinnamon, and black licorice. M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a sweet and roasty finish. D - Very drinkable. Nicely balanced with some good flavors mixed in. Cinnamon is a nice touch.

10oz pour at Tylers Apex. Good aroma, sweet. Cocoa, vanilla, get a little smoke. Dark Orangy brown color, little to no head or lace. Sweet flavor. medium body, smooth creamy mouthfeel, sweet finish. Good, not liking as much as Terrapin version imo. A.watered.down version, minorly so, but noticbly different

Pours like a stout, just a much lighter head, a sort of light brown. Aroma is nice and very spicy with the cinnamon cocoa and vanilla, very complex aroma, lots of layers a bit of booze as well. Chocolate starts the flavor strong cinnamon mid palate then vanilla ends it all out, but it leaves an odd cosmetic taste on the palate. Overall its a pretty good brew despite the odd finish

Draft at blue monk, choclatety brown pour . Chocolate, vanilla, malted milk balls fill the aroma. Good flavor of chocolate, vanilla, malts. Nice brown, balanced. Nice

On tap. Dark brown with a creamy off white head. Chocolate roasted grain caramel and cinnamon aroma and taste with a clean sweet cereal grain and strong vanilla finish and hints of cocoa powder. Nice full bodied velvety palate.

Sweet cinnamon, caramel, biscuit and brown sugar aromas. Dark brown in color with a decent foam. Extremely sweet cinnamon, brown sugar and nuts flavors with a lingering biscuit on the finish. Medium bodied, somewhat smokey. Overall, this is a very sweet ale with massive brown sugar and cinnamon notes. A unique take on a brown ale. I’d give this an A- rating.

The pour is very deep garnet with a moderately full, fluffy, beige head which is mostly diminishing and leaves scattered lace rings. The nose is full of the additions, mostly vanilla, some cocoa and milk chocolate, subtle cinnamon bread, and some toasted caramel. The flavor is similar with more vanilla than I think is necessary, subtle cinnamon, toasted caramel, a slight roasted acidity, and dry dark chocolate. The palate is nearly full, silky, drying, and soft to lively. The finish is long and rich but a decent acidity is present, more cocoa and subtle cinnamon. The beer was fairly nice to drink even with the vanilla being a bit overbearing at times. The acidity seemed to be more than it should have been but it was a nice balance to the sweetness and richness. Fairly decent strong brown ale.

Pours a dark brown color with a finger of khaki head. Lots of cocoa, vanilla, and milk chocolate in the nose. There’s a slight chili pepper aroma and heat along with a touch of raisins. Just a mild earthy note on the nose, too. Maybe a hint of roast and coffee. The flavor is full of sweet molasses, marshmallow, cocoa, and fudge. There’s a touch of raisin fruitiness, a light pepper/spice note, and a touch of vanilla. The mouthfeel is really nice and creamy, too.

Pours dark brown with a big frothy tan head. Big cinnamon aroma over chocolate and malt. The cinnamon is a bit strong on the tongue, overpowering the other flavors. Still mighty fine, though!
