COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Teaming up with Terrapin Brewing Co. for the second time, Shmaltz Brewing returns as a production partner for Reunion ’12. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in the venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle to Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise funds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).

This year’s beer is a dark ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and cinnamon. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. This brown ale leads with a sweet and subtle cinnamon aroma. Complex malt overtones quickly give way to a chocolate and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss.

Many thanks to all who have supported this project and have helped us honor Virginia’s memory.

Cheers - Pete & Alan

Brown pour, small beige head. Flavors are quite weird. Cough syrup, herbs and a strong chocolate flavor. Not very good. Too weird for me..,sweet, vegetal...meh.

22 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a large beige head. Aroma of roast, chocolate, hints of cinnamon and great vanilla. Taste is cocoa nibs, and roast. Thick-bodied with a smooth texture and light prickly mouth-carbonation. The alcohol is well hidden, but warming. Schmaltz Reunion ’12 finishes with some cocoa bitterness. Truely a desert beer.

Opaque black - brown beer. Good head but an odd muted off tan colour. Dry palate, a little crisp. Mild minerals. Bitterish chocolate and a trace of coffee. Sweetish vanilla and a pinch of cinnamon. The dominant taste here is bitterish chocolate. Finishes fresh and semi dry. Nice list of ingredients on this beer but overall they not brought together in a cohesive whole. Getting to be hard work.

Bottle 22fl.oz.

Clear dark brown colour with a large, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, dark chocolate, sweet vanilla. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, vanilla, chocolate, peppery. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20130223]

On tap at the bocktown. Dark pour with a tan head. Barely any aroma but there is a tad of this mild beery thing hitting my olfactory. First taste is stronger but has lots of chocolate or malt in there. Chocolately feel fer sure. This stuff was way too expensive for what it is. Finish is lots like choco flavored medicine. wew. Not impressed.

Tap: brown pour with medium-sized light-tan head. Aroma is sweet with vanilla, cola, chocolate and maybe a touch of brown sugar. Flavor is surprisingly drier than expected with lots of vanilla, unsweetened cola, cocoa, a dusty bitterness, and a slight cinnamon spice tickle at the finish. The body seems thin for the spice and abv. Decent flavors and the spices are not overdone, worth a try on occasion.

My bottle [650ml] shared with HogTownHarry, jercraigs & mabel. Pours a dark, deep amber-red with a large long-lasting fluffy beige head. Aroma has lots of chocolate along with some vanilla, light spices, light hops and molasses. malty flavour along with dark fruit, vanilla, lots of chocolate and light leafy hops. Medium bodied. Like I mentioned, there’s lots of chocolate in this, it’s borderline too much -- but ultimately, it’s not.
