COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Teaming up with Terrapin Beer Co. for the third time, Schmaltz Brewing returns as a production partner for Reunion ’13. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in this venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise funds and awareness on behalf of the Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).

This year’s beer is a dark ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla, cinnamon, and coffee from NYC and Upstate New York. It was originally inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant.

Dark brown coloured body with a very nice three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of strong spices, nutmeg, anise, cardamom, canella and tons of roasted malts, alcohol and a touch of dry oak. Medium-bodied; Very assertive spice flavours dominate the taste with canella and cardamom coming out the strongest, but finishing a little bit spicey. Aftertaste has much more roasted malt, touches of alcohol and quite a bit of bitterness at the finish that doesn’t go great. Overall, a decent beer - made with quality and is full of flavour, but the spices are a bit too much and the depth is not effective enough. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Arlington (Clarendon), Virginia on 24-October-2013 for US$7.99 sampled at home in Washington on 20-April-2014 a few minutes after returning from a land with no spices in beer (Germany).

Appearance: this beer is a very dark maroon color, practically black in all but the brightest light, pours with a very large tan head, nice head retention Aroma: coffee, vanilla, dark roasted malt, Taste: vanilla coffee, sweet, has a bit of bitterness on the finish, milky, perhaps some cinnamon or spice like chili Palate: lively carbonation for a stout, slight coffee aftertaste, has some froth and a moderate mouthfeel Overall: not a bad beer, I like the hints of vanilla in it, could use more complexity if anything ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This was a nice beer. Nothing exceptional but enjoyable. Aroma was the best thing about it. Chocolate and vanilla are the main smells. Pour was a nice milk chocolate brown with a one finger off white head. Taste was OK. A little thin, but that also hides the alcohol dangerously well. Chocolate covered coffee bean with notes of sweet vanilla. The finish was all coffee and as it warmed more flavors came out. I changed taste from a 6 to a 7 for this reason. Mild carbonation. Nice beer

Hands down, one of the single most disgusting beers I've ever tasted. The nose was way over the top, a crazed mishmash of flavors, and the taste was worse. It was also sticky. Very, very sticky. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark reddish brown pour. Tan head. Kind of tastes like an imperial brine that’s been treated like a hunahpus. I didn’t love it.

Strong flavors of cocoa, vanilla, and some light coffee and cinnamon. Has a really rich mouthfeel, and maybe a bit too sweet.

Bomber, with Zach, of course. Pours a deep dark reddish brown color with a very small head. Nose is strikingly cocoa, mocha, vanilla bean and some background allspice. Taste is sweet chocolate espresso, mocha and cinnamon. Full of flavor with a nice complexity and mix of ingredients. Finishes on sweet chocolate notes. Delicious. Kudos to the brewers, and to the end of myeloma and breast cancer ! Quaff Score 8 / 10

Pours a red brown with a tan head and aroma of spices, cinnamon, and chocolate. Taste is of cinnamon and spices up front with cocoa, coffee, vanilla, and roasted malt into the sweet, roasted finish. Delicious brew

This is the last beer from the Shmaltz holiday gift pack. It is similar to several of the other beers in that it is very unique and hard to describe. Pours a very murky dark brown with a hint of ruby with a little khaki colored head. Aroma is different than I can remember having with a little cinnamon, some roast, and some odd fruitiness. Taste is tart with a mild coffee flavor, some dark fruit notes, and a little roasted malt. Medium bodied with mild carbonation and a dry finish. This beer tastes like a bunch of ingredients were put together and the resulting flavors do not complement each other.

22 oz bottle into a pint glass, from notes. A: Pours a dark ruby color with a one finger mocha-colored head. The latter has a nice creaminess, which allows it to leave some nice lacing on the glass. S: Wow. Nice. Tons of vanilla and chocolate make itself known immediately, with an underlying tone of brown sugar. The coffee really comes out strong when allowed to warm up. T: At first, it’s slightly chocolaty. Then BOOM! Coffee hits the palate hard. Normally, this would be great, but the coffee here is stale and vegetal. There are also hoppy and vanilla hints hanging around the finish. Shame about the stale coffee, because this is pretty decent otherwise. M: Light and fairly crisp, and quite dry. The coffee’s really going to work on the palate, giving this beer nice drinkability, even without the presence of assertive carbonation. O: Not bad, but it could have been so much more if the coffee here was ’fresher’. Incidentally, my friend who I drank this with enjoys stale coffee, meaning he loved it. YMMV, natch.
