Teaming up with Terrapin Beer Co. for the third time, Schmaltz Brewing returns as a production partner for Reunion ’13. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in this venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise funds and awareness on behalf of the Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).

This year’s beer is a dark ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla, cinnamon, and coffee from NYC and Upstate New York. It was originally inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant.

Bottle. Reddish brown. Lots of different flavors trying to come through here and it doesn’t really work that well. Maybe cinnamon chocolate? Not crazy about this one.

650 ml bottle. Pours a very dark mahogany with light head. Spicy aromas of chicory, cinnamon, and raisin bread. Flavors of cinnamon, coffee, tobacco, and roasted malts. Quite spicy up front but mellows towards the end. Interesting.

650ml bottle pours a dark brown color with a 2 finger light brown head that leaves some really nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is dark chocolate with some roasted grains and hints of vanilla. Taste is a bold chocolate malty sweetness with a light roasted grain and coffee bitterness, with hints of vanilla and a touch of cinnamon in the finish. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. A very interesting brew which I enjoyed sampling immensely.

Coffee color with ruby tones and generous tan foam, lively and subsiding gradually. Aromas of soy, cocoa, vanilla, and a bit of boozy vapor. The flavor is sweet, like a porter, some chocolate and vanilla, very mild bitterness, with some warmth and just a bit of sour, fruit finish. Slightly syrupy mouthfeel with soft, smooth carbonation. Very delicious brew

Bottle from variety pack Dec 2013. Pours hazy chestnut colored with 1-finger off-white head. Nose is huge hot peppers, coffee, some cacao. Tastes of coffee, roasty dark malt mild nuts, molasses, cacao, and jalapeno flavor late. Medium in palate heft and complexity, with more sticky caramel and cacao notes late.

Bottle from the holiday mix pack. Pours dark brown, tan head. Nose is coffee, sweet chocolate, vanilla. Flavour is sweetish vanilla mocha, tobacco, vanilla really works here, first time I’ve said that I believe. Smooth silk. Delivers as promised.

Poured from 22oz bomber. pours a clear dark brown with a red hue in the light with a light brown head about 2 fingers thick worth, aroma has quite a bit of chocolate and roast with a hint of cinnamon and spices, the flavor has a chocolate front end with the spics in the finish, nice thick mouthnfeel, chocolate is pretty pronounced through out, not bad.

pours dark brown with a thick tan head. some lacing left on my glass. aroma is very stout like. aroma is of fresh roasted coffee beans, cocoa, cinnamon and dark malts. when you smell this you know what your about to taste because they are spot on. medium body(seems thin because i still think im drinking a stout.). medium carbonation. has a slick mouthfeel and finishes with a bitter afterbite of fresh coffee beans. got this in a holiday pack so i cant say im disappointed. its pretty good actually. i would never have thought this was 8 percent abv.

12 oz. bottle poured into tulip. Deep brown with a generous frothy tan head and impressive carbonation and excellent head retention. Medium intensity aromas of coffee and cocoa nibs. Nicely balanced malty brown ale flavor with plenty of roasty coffee flavor and a long bitter finish and a bit of heat. The carbonation contributes to a lively mouthfeel. A worthwhile collaboration, IMO.

Wife brought back from Texas. She liked this one. I didn’t so much. This is pretty much all cinnamon and clove. Don’t taste much lease as those are so overpowering
