Teaming up with Terrapin Beer Co. for the third time, Schmaltz Brewing returns as a production partner for Reunion ’13. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in this venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise funds and awareness on behalf of the Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).

This year’s beer is a dark ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla, cinnamon, and coffee from NYC and Upstate New York. It was originally inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant.

Shared at GregFest 2013 from a brown bomber bottle into a nonic half pint glass. It poured a nice clear reddish brown colour. Aromas and flavours of a bland dark ale plus faint cacao nibs and coffee. Not deeply flawed, but unimpressive.

12 oz bottle. Dark brown with a splotchy head. Nose is cocoa, coffee, cinnamon and vanilla. Creamy medium body with a brisk buzz. Taste is coffee bean then dark roast. The cinnamon and vanilla add a nice sweetness finishing with earthy cocoa nibs.

Shmaltz / Terrapin collaboration 'Reunion Ale '13' @ 8.0% , served from 650 ml bottle purchased for $6.50 , a beer for hope A-pour is a light brown from the bottle to a dark brown in the glass with a lot of ruby red along the glass edge peeking thru , a small tan/off white head that is dissapating quickly leaving no lace along the pint S-coffee , hint of cinnamon in the background T-so similar to an English Porter , with a sweet vanilla start to the swallow MF-ok carbonation , bit strong ABV leads to the full body Ov-ok beer , has that Brown ale bitterness well hidden prost LampertLand ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma makes me think of chili peppers, but its actually the cinnamon I think. Fresh Coffee beans and vanilla show up on the front of the flavor. The cinnamon has a strong showing on the middle, and finishes with cocoa. Not as enjoyable as last year.

Tap. Dark pour with off white head. Smells of dark malts and spices. Very complex flavor of spices along with the dark malts. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours dark brown with big tan head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, and peppers. Taste of peppers, chocolate, malt, and coffee. This medium bodied brew has so much going on but in a good way. I enjoyed these Reunion Ales.

Bottle. Murky, opaque dark brown with a foamy tan head. Strong cinnamon and coffee in the nose followed with cocoa, toasted malt and vanilla notes. Taste is also strong cinnamon, robust coffee, chocolate, dusty cocoa, light vanilla, toasted malt, candy and light cake notes. Body is medium with a strong bubbly carbonation and lingering cinnamon spiciness. Ends with more abundant cinnamon, coffee, toasted malt, dark chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, candy notes and light cake.

Shmaltz makes their name from producing creative, complex and ultimately tasty beers and this is no different. Definitely has some vanilla aroma and the cocoa and cinnamon comes through in the aftertaste.
