Teaming up with Terrapin Beer Co. for the third time, Schmaltz Brewing returns as a production partner for Reunion ’13. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in this venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise funds and awareness on behalf of the Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).

This year’s beer is a dark ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla, cinnamon, and coffee from NYC and Upstate New York. It was originally inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant.

Dark color, almost black, with beige compact head. Smell of old wood. Somehow also the flavor recalls old furniture, old sofa, some cocoa, leather; there is some chocolate malt and spices.
Weird but not bad.

22oz bottle. Cola dark-brown body with large tan head. Aroma is moderately sweet, vanilla, some cocoa, cinnamon. Taste is moderately sweet, cocoa, cinnamon, some vanilla, caramel, light booziness. Medium-full body, some stickiness. Had the Terrapin version on draft last night, and am surprised by how much more I enjoyed that one.

Bomber from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark ruddy copper (against strong light) with a foamy tan head. Aroma is primarily coffee/chocolate. Med + body. Flavor is chocolate, coffee, cinnamon. Hint of vanilla. Pretty tasty drink. Finishing towards dry, and coffee bitter.

A clear mahogany brown ale with a thick lacing brown head. In aroma, sweet nutty coffee malt with caramel notes, chocolate, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet chocolate malt with coffee, nuts, very nice and interesting. Bottle at Brooklyn Pour 2013.

\Bomber poured a clear reddish brown with a lasting tan head. Aromas of coffee, tobacco, cinnamon, vanilla and light cocoa. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of coffee, tobacco, light cinnamon and light cocoa with a smooth lingering coffee finish.

Dark reddish brown pour. Tan head. Kind of tastes like an imperial brine that’s been treated like a hunahpus. I didn’t love it.

Bottle from variety pack Dec 2013. Pours hazy chestnut colored with 1-finger off-white head. Nose is huge hot peppers, coffee, some cacao. Tastes of coffee, roasty dark malt mild nuts, molasses, cacao, and jalapeno flavor late. Medium in palate heft and complexity, with more sticky caramel and cacao notes late.

Bomber. Poured clear mahogany with a toasted beige head. The aroma picked up roasted cocoa, cinnamon, and vanilla bean with a bit of coffee backing.. became quite coffee-focused when it warmed up. The flavor found lightly tart coffee, cinnamon, and oaky notes throughout.. dry-roasted coffee and cocoa on the middle.. tangy and not that pleasant on the finish. Medium-bodied at most on the palate.. this just didn’t come together very well.

22oz bomber pours with a mahogany body that supports a thin mocha head of foam. The aroma offers up plenty of chili pepper notes and then some light cinnamon spices and baker’s chocolate. The taste has chili pepper right up front but there’s just chili flavors and really no heat that I can tell. Just behind that are pleasing notes of chocolate bar like goodness, some cinnamon spices and dark roasted malts. It stays firmly with chili pepper flavor and then just a mild degree of heat well into the finish. Really tasty stuff.

9oz on tap at Yard House, a month or two ago. Mostly clear dark brown / red color. Good thin tan head. Good rows of lace. Nice big cocoa nib in the aroma. A lot of coffee in the flavor. Bigger body. Smooth, soft, sort of crisp lighter carbonation, more dry in the finish. Moderate to stronger sweet taste, lighter bitterness. Light bit of spice. I love the big coffee and cocoa nib in the nose, but overall the flavor is very sweet, which is a little biting in the finish.
