rkuhnel (1064), Eureka, California, USA Apr 11, 2008 From a 500 ml bottle this poured into a pint glass was a nice reddish brown with a very fat and thick creamy head that settled very slowly and left nice lacing. Aroma of caramel malts and light coffee and chocolate. Medium but enjoyable mouthfeel, and flavors of toffee and nuts. Medium dry finish. Pretty good.
FlacoAlto (2073), Tucson, Arizona, USA Jul 2, 2008 A brisk pour produces an almost four-finger thick, lightly amber tinged, tan colored head that just crests the top of my 25cl tulip glass. The beer is a murky, dark amber / red color but shows a brilliantly clear, cranberry stained, bright amber color when held up to the light. The aroma is quite malt focused as this is noticeable upon pouring the beer. Sweet, caramelized malt notes are backed by ample toasty malt notes. Aromas of biscuits, lightly toasted – yet hardy dark German bread, light raisin / berry notes and even a touch of lightly roasted coffee in the finish. I really like how malty and rich this beer’s nose is; quite satiating all by itself.
Sweet tasting up front, but actually surprisingly light bodied for how rich the aroma was. Quaffable just like a good Dunkel should be and it has a nice, persistent carbonation that adds a bit of a prickly texture to the brew. Richly toasted malt notes evoke flavors of chewy, whole grain bread, light raisin notes. Perhaps a bit thin up front, but the rich, albeit not thick, malt character soaks into the palate and boosts the perceived richness of this brew. A touch of age is starting to show through the malt here; it contributes a light sherry note that only seems to add to the complexity more than anything.
A tasty brew, I really like the deep maltiness that this beer attains. Definitely a satisfying drinking experience.

(080108) jarspag (503), San Diego, California, USA Dec 14, 2007 Bottle courtesy of the boss! Hey, she tried. A nice enjoyable, medium-everything dunkel. Nothing extravagent, but nothing to really complain about. Great appearance as it boasts a nice frothy two finger head. Flavor picked up a bit of caramel, toffee, and nut - as expected, with a touch of water. Overall, an enjoyable beer, and pretty much what I was expecting considering the abv. elelwarren (132), SF Bay area, California, USA Dec 6, 2007 Mahogony colored with honey, bready, lightly plumlike, caramel aroma. Huge head due to high carbonation, which is probably the weakest element of the beer. No lacing. Flavor is nice (Caramel sweetness turning to light ly dry) but weak, bubbly & watery. If the beer had higher gravity, it would be overwhelmingly good due to the wonderful aroma notes . As is, quite easy to drink & unchallenging.
