4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 Borresteijn (3647) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - DEC 11, 2012
33cl Bottle from the man himself, cheers Alex! Clear reddish amber colour, creamy off-white head. Aroma of a whiff of blue cheese first, then lovely sweet malts, light citrus hops, grass, raisins, red fruits, bubblegum. Flavour is quite sweet but kept in check, very malty, raisins, red fruits, caramel, nice earthy liquorice root, great creamy grassy hoppy bitter finish. Fullbodied, smooth, fabulous beer, imho a great take on an English barley wine with "a little" extra hops. Excellent.
4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Kosmokrator (291) - ITALY - MAR 20, 2013
Bel color arancio con soffice schiuma bianca non molto persistente. Aroma avvolgente, forti sentori di luppolo, toffee, quasi di formaggio; resinosa, pungente e dolciastra. Gusto inizialmente dolciastro, molto maltoso, tendente poi all’amaro pronunciato e generosamente luppolato con note agrumate e caramellate. Corpo massiccio, strutturata, sciropposa e liquorosa: una birra incredibilmente intensa, alcolica e forte, da cardiopalma!

33cl bottle, courtesy of Alex. Thanks Sir! It pours a mostly clear deep oragne/ ruby colour, like Grand Marnier. On top a small beige head that dissipates turning into a ring on the side of the glass. Aroma is sweet but hoppy at the same time, as the hops appear to have conferred mainly fruity notes. Loads of persimmon and ripened prunes in this one. Alongside big caramel and vanilla notes. A very subtle smoky note as well. The malty notes resembles a good bourbon profile. Taste is bittersweet, though to say for certain, and certainly well balanced. Hoppy bitterness on the palate, but the flavor profile is all on the sweet notes as, once again, hops confer mainly a fruity character. Once again persimmon and prunes, peaches and mangos. But all ripe fruit, sweet and bold. The malt profile in this one is simply outstanding then: vanilla, caramel, leather, tobacco and booze. In terms of profile, this really resembles a fine whiskey, obviously muted and way less boozy, but the sort of flavours are in that ballpark. Also, this reminded me of some very fine old style barleywines, just hopped up. Like a hopped up JW Lees Harvest. Honestly, I could see this being a great brew also without hops in the traditional barleywine style. Mouthfeel is bold and quite sticky with good carbonation. Overall, this is truly a masterpiece, and as I said, also without the hops this would be a great beer.

Arriva la bestia! L’unica cosa che non va è il colore, un miscuglio indescrivibile e torbido, l’aroma è drammaticamente luppolato e così il sapore, con in più l’equilibrio del malto.

Bottle @ WWT II thanks to Borresteijn. Clear red color, small off - white to beige head. Smell malts, lightly sweet, lots of hops, oh dear me. Taste lightly malts, lots of hops, some sweetness, good bitterness, lovely balance. Very good balance, full carbonation. Wow!

Bottle @ WWT II. Clear dark amber, headless pour. Aroma is sweet caramel hops, almost a wine character. Flavour is perfect balance between the hops and the malt, carried by a light alcoholic character. Despite this being 13%, it drinks like 9%. This is sweet and incredible hoppy at the same time. Awesome brew!

Bottle at home courtesy of Alex, cheers!
Dark ruby with white lacing with fruity maltloaf and brandy nose with supporting Seville marmalade. Concentrated citrus fruit, tongue tingling mouth watering pithiness with robust toffee underscore. Long citrus refrain. The alcohol in this is barely noticeable. Masterful.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 maekchu (1090) - Hirakata, JAPAN - JAN 4, 2013
Bottle shared by KyotoLefty. Thanks! Big sourish and prune aroma, with some candied fruit and fumes. Dark straw color. Sharp tingly hop initial; mid comes through with complex fruitiness and some hop balance; strong alcohol and hoppy finish. Medium body. Pretty damn good. But really more like a barley wine. Hides the alcohol to some extent. At least it doesn’t hit the palate like a 13% brew usually does.
