COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Cascadian Dark Ale, otherwise know as our Double Black IPA, emerged stylistically from the Pacific North West. It has an IPA backbone with a "special blend" of choice roasted malts combined with a hard hitting matchup of hops, knocking this beer into a new weight class. Dry hopped and unfiltered for maximum flavor and punch. Enjoy it with a trainer!

12oz bottle in a bulb. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of dark malts plus some floral and light resiny/citrusy hops. Flavor the same, with an interesting blend, but not perfect. Average texture. Not bad but could be better.

Chinook vs. Sorachi Ace...a battle where everyone wins. In truth this beer smells a whole lot more like lactic burnt coffee than any hop. It looks like flat Coca Cola. Bitter front, but mainly a sweet, burnt out malt flavor predominates. More over, this beer is extremely smooth and only has a touch of finishing bite. If meant to be ’extreme’ this beer fails, though it is highly satisfying as an everyday offering. The problem with this style as a whole is a lack of cohesion, since the contradictions are part of the design.

Bottle in NH - thanks to Adam. Pours clearish, red-brown with a creamy, beige head. Smells a bit like urinal cake, though not in an entirely bad way, if that’s possible...the aroma also carries notes of toasty brown bread and grapefruit. Medium sweet flavor with earth, lightly burnt grass, some alcohol zing. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly boozy to finish with burnt wood, earth and toasty malts. Beer might be a little tired. So so.

12oz Bottle, purchased at Wines & More - Cranston, RI. Aroma glues together sinamar, alcohols, and sorachi ace. There may be a tiny bit of diacetyl leaking through. Flavors replicate the same in a dry, somewhat thin, and relatively warm package. The Sorachi Ace overrides the Chinook as the dominate hop flavor and character. Bitterness waits until the very end of the finish to pop up, staying juicy and minty. There is a slight cola quality to the Sinamar dark malt that takes away from the malt body. Color is not an excuse for lack of malt structure, the biggest flaw of this construction. Hotter than it needs to be. Some nice flavors paired with a confused palate.

Light brown appearance, not too much head.Nose is guava juice and pineapple. Taste is pretty smokey with nice bitterness. Loving the fruitiness of this but the dark smokiness really dominates what could be a good beer.

12oz. bottle, price of $2.49 @ Nikki’s Liquors, Providence, R.I. Nose is citrus hops with nice roasted malts in the aromas. Opaque black pour with nice head retention. The flavors come together to provide a mix between dark, bitter, roast and crisp, pine hop bitterness. Lots of citrus comes through as well. I consumed a fresh bottle and it’s apparent with how vibrant the hops are. Medium body with a nice lingering pine finish. This was a nice “fight” between citrus and pine hops.

Black, thick pour with a medium tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, earthy hops and faint bitter chocolate. Medium body with a nice dry finish.

Pours a quite dark brown but penetrable to light, showing the carbonation; also has a small tan foam head. Smells of hops, roasted malts, espresso coffee. Nice hoppy and dry, I believe they use Chinook hops in Dogfishhead 60 min IPA as well and this is somewhat similar. Roasted malt overshadows the hops but both are pretty powerful and tasty. Maybe some elements of chocolate and coffee but overall this reminds me a lot of a dark 60 min but its 8% and just as drinkable. From Rhode Island, this makes me proud.

Sample at GABF 10/13/2012, thanks to Bluemeow76 for assistance with note-taking. This beer pours brownish-black with a medium tan head and stringy lacing. Aroma of toasted malt and hops. Medium body with a resiny hops character offset by sweet roasted malt and chocolate. The finish is moderately bitter with a piney hops aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
