This Cascadian Dark Ale, otherwise know as our Double Black IPA, emerged stylistically from the Pacific North West. It has an IPA backbone with a "special blend" of choice roasted malts combined with a hard hitting matchup of hops, knocking this beer into a new weight class. Dry hopped and unfiltered for maximum flavor and punch. Enjoy it with a trainer!

On tap at Fete for the Grown Ass Prom..in Providence, RI. First one gave me a buzz, and the 2nd one gave me an even bigger buzz! Black IPAs are hit or miss for me, but this was one of the best ones I’ve had. Great hop-malt balance, with a smooth creamy texture. Will have to look out for a bottle of the bourbon aged version on my next visit up here.

Bottle. Cool beer. Very dark opaque black pour with a foamy tan head. Soft / sweet chocolate malts with some piney hopiness poking through. Creamy texture. Getting some sweet grape and licorice in here too.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Nikki’s Liquors, 4/12/15

Aroma: Roasted coffee and dark chocolate aroma, underlying pine, toast, and a bit of earth.
Appearance: Pours a dark brown color, with a really nice, lasting, frothy tan head and heavy lace.
Flavor: The flavor is unsweet coffee/dark malts, minimal sweetness, fairly bitter on the finish.
Palate: Medium bodied and fairly creamy on the mouth, worth a soft carbonation, and a dry finish.
Overall Impression: This is a great looking beer with a head that refuses to go away. The aroma and the flavor are solid, but not spectacular. Solid, but the pour is the standout here over the rest of the brew.

Tap at the brewery. Pours clear black with a medium, frothy beige head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is roast and chocolate malt with prunes, earthy, pine and resin hops. Flavor is dark, bitter malt and hops, dark fruits and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

I found this surprisingly good. A nice dark brew with a thick fragrant head and a lot of lacing.

From the 12 fl. oz., bottle. The pour is quite nice with its dark brown to near black color. Lingering off-white head. Really fresh aroma with an good fruit hop character as well as a clean malt note. Licorice. The body is medium. The taste has a kind of malted licorice thing going on but generally smooth.,

I teased the brewer about his use of Sorachi Ace hops in a Cascadian Ale, but I actually like the mix. Great hop aroma and flavor. Roasted malts give a dry flavor and aftertaste.

On draught at Malt in Newport, RI. Arrived a very deep brown, just about black, with a thin creamy tan head that lasted through the second sip and left a full sheet of foam with each sip. Pleasant but mild aroma of pine and malt and not much else. The flavor is malt followed by a solid dose of mostly flavorless bitterness. Dry, bitter finish. Disappointing.

Sample at GABF 2013. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of toffee, fudge, vanilla, fruity hops and malt. Flavour is over moderate sweet and bitter. Full bodied with soft carbonation.
