4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at the brewpub -- notes from Jan 6th, 2011.
Pours solid-opaque brown-black with a creamy mocha head that leaves sheets of lace around the snifter. Aroma of dark stone fruits, maple syrup, rich, dark-chocolatey malt, Flavor is richly malty, syrupy, lots of crunchy roasted-grain malt, bitter dark chocolate comes to the fore, followed by some toffee. Starts to get warm and alcoholic after a few sips. Thick, viscous mouthfeel with crunchy, grainy, malty, syrupy aftertaste. Big, thick, complex, well-layered beer. This is a grand slam, and with more ratings, would almost certainly be a 99th percentile beer.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: MAY 18, 2011 On tap at Revolution into a snifter...Dark black pour, but on the fringe its dark brown, strange for such a dark beer. The head comes to about two full fingers of medium tan, that is creamy and looks great, at first. The head falls really fast, too fast, ok lacing...The aroma is appealing but way to sweet. Lots of sweet chocolate and syrup with a touch of coffee on the finish...The taste is still out of balance, oh what a little more coffee could have done to this beer! Very sweet, lots of chocolate syrup, with bakers chocolate and a little coffee on the finish...The feel is nice, viscous with bite, nice warming sensation...This didnít take me long to drink but I wouldnít call it crushable.
A decent stout but out of balance. Next time around hopefully this is fixed. This is going to be barrel aged, but canít imagine this getting any sweeter. If you like sweet stouts get this, but then you might as well be drinking the Mad Cow which is better

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at the brewpub. Poured near black with a yellowish brown head that lasted throughout the beer. Aroma was full of roasted malt, dark chocolate and maple syrup with just a hint of bitter pine. Flavor began with sweet dark chocolate, maple syrup and a bit of roast and was joined by some pine bitterness and a decent amount of alcohol.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at RBC. Black brown pour with a brown head and minimal lacing. Smelled of bitter chocolate and caramel with a dark fruit and roast backing. Taste was smoooooooth, almost like chocolate milk? The fruits coming out at the end confused me a little. Very intriguing but something of an identity crises it seems.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a pitchblack thick opaque pour, dark and ominous with a frothy brownish head that dies to a thicker ring, light lacing. Aromas are thicker sweetness, toffee and roasted malts mix, biscuits and cocoa, some roasty coffee comes into the fold. A little vaague for such a big beer. Touches of black licorice. Initial is thicker, roasty and black licorice, anise take over. Molasses, toffee, sweeter chocolate and roasty coffee is bigger on the finish. Sweet toffee, some cream, oats. Maple syrup provides a telltale lingering sweetness, touches of bittering hops in the finish blend with the roast. Fairly thick, the hops arenít adequate as the roast and sticky sweetness prevail. The roasty finish is nice, the anise and sweetness become a bit cloying for me. A big beer, flavorful, with flavor and chemistry shortfalls for me. It grows on me a bit, but overall is a bit harsh around the edges. Not Revolutionís best effort. A big beer for the sake of being big, too sweet, with some nice roast, but lingering molasses, dark fruit just donít strike me as all right. Ok

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the brewpub. Pours a black body with a finger-width, dense and very creamy, milky coffee colored head that dissipates slowly and leaves a heavy lacing. Aroma is sweet and malty with lots of molasses, brown sugar, milky chocolates, and cherry fruit syrup. Some caramel, a light coffee, and a light herbal hopping. Flavor is similar. More of a distinct hop bitterness to blend with all the sweet, rich malts which I find nice. Still lots of molasses, cherry fruit syrup, caramel, rich chocolate and cocoa, and brown sugar. Finishes with a light roast and a nice hop bitterness to balance all the sweet and rich malts. Lengthy aftertaste following a smooth, medium-full body that dries nicely thanks to the hops with a soft, light-moderate carbonation. Overall, a really nice impy. Lots of rich and sweet flavors up front, but balanced nicely with a solid hopping that dries quite well at the end. Iíd prefer a bit more roast and slightly less sweet, but this was well balanced, nicely made, and very enjoyable.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at Revbrew. Pours deep black with a small brownhead that sticks around. Nose is noticeably sweet, notes of molasses, coffee, dark cocoa. On taste, fruity alcohol notes, booze, cocoa and coffee. Fruity and robust. Very full body. Strong bitterness that supports the malty sweetness. Roast helps as well. Very interesting, though not my favorite RIS.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft. Pours inky with a dark tan head. Rich sweet aroma of molasses and chocolate. Taste much of the same rich candied sugar, marshmellow, chocolate, syrup, some booze. Seriously rich and sweet but at the 5oz pour I got enjoyable.
