COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November of 2010, we filled 1 Jack Daniels and 1 Heaven Hill Rye Whiskey barrel with our Barleywine (Institutionalized). The combination of these two unique barrels yield a very rich and complex finished product. Deep aromas and flavors of dark stone fruits, bourbon, molasses, toasted coconut and vanilla come in waves as you swirl this beer in the snifter.

Future releases, especially the first bottle release saw this offering aged exclusively in Woodford Reserve barrels. This is noted for the 2012 December Release, but will not be seperated out.

Bottle to glass. Pours a hazy nut brown mahogany color with a tan head. Aroma is bourbon, molasses, caramel malts, vanilla. Flavor is quite sweet, with syrup, molasses, touch of bourbon and vanilla. Love the barrel character on this beer. Wonderful.

Cloudy red mahogany, small tan head. Strong vanilla, light allspice, molasses, almost rum-like. Considerably sweet with a bit of bitterness. Strong upfront alcohol, thick syrupy body, quite a lot of acid. Really quite a giant beer in a lot of ways. Finish is very long, alcoholic. Some warm butteriness. Good, not sure the balance is all the way there.

From notes. Finally found the long-lost notebook from the 4 Elf Party at Dark Horse on December 13! So, that’s where this was found. Shared by a passer-by for a chance to hang around the campfire we’d built. This was labeled as Straight Jacket. The pour is a medium caramel brown color with a decent light khaki head and some good lacing. The aroma is pretty good. It’s hot up front, but then the caramel and vanilla mesh really well. There is a light coconut going on and a wonderful woody bourbon there at the end. I like how the dark fruit really comes on through the back end. The flavor is much of the same, Lots of vanilla, dark fruits, caramel, roasted malt, and bourbon. I like how the barrel comes through at the end. The mouth feel is decently thick, though it could be a bit thicker. There is a nice soft carbonation that helps it cling. The booze is pretty well hidden. The aftertaste is roasty and full of dark fruit. Not bat at all

A giant surprise at a recent tasting, where it beat Firestone Sucaba in the barley wine category in somewhat of a landslide. A gorgeous beer, showing a smooth, creamy body of rich caramel malt, molasses, dark fruit, balanced bourbon notes and understated spice all layered together nicely. Alcohol is there on the finish but gains traction and coverage from the overall smoothness of the brew. Well done.

[Tap] Dark orange color with a small amount of head on top. Sweet aromas of caramel, molasses, booze, toffee and vanilla. Flavors of caramel, brown sugar, fruitcake, oak/vanilla, bourbon, figs and dark cherry. Low levels of carbonation. Very complex and sticky. Quite tasty and one of the best I have had from Revolution.

2014 Straight Jacket release - On tap at Binny’s Clybourn tasting room. Aroma is intense bourbon. Flavor is strong bourbon with some cinnamon, brown sugar, and cocoa notes. Clean, albeit somewhat boozy finish. Good extremely bourbon flavored barleywine. Barrel flavor covers up most of base beer flavor.

Got in a trade with TheFugitive. 22 ounce bottle into snifter bottled on 1/17/2014. Pours hazy dark ruby red color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of raisin, plum, fig, date, caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, vanilla, coconut, bourbon, oak, and toast/oaky earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark malt, bourbon barrel, and dark fruit notes; with good strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, fig, date, caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, vanilla, coconut, bourbon, oak, and toast/oaky earthiness. Slight tannic oak bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, plum, fig, date, caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, vanilla, coconut, bourbon, and oak on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity and robustness of dark malt, bourbon barrel, and dark fruit flavors; with a great malt/barrel balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very creamy, fairly slick, and slightly tannic mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome barrel aged English barelywine style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark malt, bourbon barrel, and dark fruit flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the huge ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.
