In November of 2010, we filled 1 Jack Daniels and 1 Heaven Hill Rye Whiskey barrel with our Barleywine (Institutionalized). The combination of these two unique barrels yield a very rich and complex finished product. Deep aromas and flavors of dark stone fruits, bourbon, molasses, toasted coconut and vanilla come in waves as you swirl this beer in the snifter.

Future releases, especially the first bottle release saw this offering aged exclusively in Woodford Reserve barrels. This is noted for the 2012 December Release, but will not be seperated out.

Appearance: The body has velvety haze in the deep garnet body. A short tan head rises for a moment from the body.
Aroma: The aroma hints at a lot, dried fruits, vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, coconut, oak and a chocolate. Boy there’s a lot going on here! The aroma is slightly restrained, but in a good way.
Taste: Oh this is a big beer, but it barely drinks like it. Big caramel and brown sugar on the intro. The mid-taste picks up vanilla, oak, and a prominent flat cola flavor as bourbon is hinted. The finish picks up bourbon with hints of spice. A touch of tannins in noticed with dried prunes throughout. The finish reminds me of rum and coke in a way. There’s little in the way of booze despite being 13%. The booze warms the throat, but in a pleasing way.
Palate: Full-bodied, nearly chewy, with mild carbonation.
Overall: I’m impressed with how well this hides the alcohol. The flavor is big, complex and nicely balanced between the flavors. This really has a lot going on though, very nicely done.

Bottle: A little over one year old. Basically opaque, a dingy shade of copper with a light earth colored head that turns into a relatively chunky layer of foam & a sizable collar. Aroma is wonderful; tons of sweet caramel & toffee syrup drizzled over a dark fruit bouquet of prunes, raisins, & sticky dates. Mid-whiff brings plenty of vanilla, wood & mild fudge notes, as the bourbon sits quietly in the periphery. Taste is nearly as lovely with a huge peanut brittle-like flavor, layered with toffee, sticky brown sugar, molasses, woody vanilla, & bursts of cocoa dust. Mild, dried dark fruit character comes alive with warmth, as does the bourbon... Plenty of belly warming booze to go around, though it never becomes cumbersome. Thick, somewhat sticky & coating finish. This is a great barleywine; top-tier, hitting hard on all cylinders.

Bottle thanks to tectactoe for sharing. Labeled as Straight Jacket now. Pours a cloudy copper-rust color with a small fizzy head. Aromas are rich butterscotch and toffee, big vanilla, some oak, and candied fruit. Tastes delcious with rich butterscotch and toffee nicely balanced with vanilla, fruit candy, and bourbony finish. Medium to thick body. Stick, syrupy mouthfeel. Great beer.

Bottle: The aroma consists of buttery toffee, caramel, fruit, vanilla, and a hint of bourbon. It pours a transparent amber with a small off-white head that quickly fades to a thin film outlined by a thin ring. The flavor starts with caramel, buttery toffee, and a hint of brown sugar. The finish has vanilla, oak, and bourbon. It’s medium-full bodied with a slightly sticky mouthfeel.

Échantillonné du Extreme beer fest 2014: Un barleywine définitivement facile à boire avec son vieillissement en barriques brillant, son alcool évanouie, ses tartinades de caramel et de marmelade et sa finale presque croustillante.

First of all: what a great surprise! Light brownish pours that settles in a ruby red color with a small semi dense head. Big barrel and loads of sweet malt on the nose. Very little hops but it doesn’t matter. Drinkability a is high here even though it’s a brute. Such great barrel influence here. Malty flavours with a boozy twist.. This is good. Worth seeking out!

Bomber to snifter. Pours a nice rich red, almost no head. Lot of dark fruits, booze, and molasses on the nose. Bourban and oak come through very nicely. Really good barley wine.

Bottle of Straight Jacket generously shared by Dave. Aroma is figs, candied nuts, and brandy. Pours a solid red brown with a very small head. Taste is just fantastic. Sweet candied nuts, dark fruits, a good presence of oak barrel, and almost a roasty body. Perfectly balanced and not cloyingly sweet. This is just a perfectly made BA Barleywine. Underrated in my opinion.
