COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November of 2010, we filled 1 Jack Daniels and 1 Heaven Hill Rye Whiskey barrel with our Barleywine (Institutionalized). The combination of these two unique barrels yield a very rich and complex finished product. Deep aromas and flavors of dark stone fruits, bourbon, molasses, toasted coconut and vanilla come in waves as you swirl this beer in the snifter.

Future releases, especially the first bottle release saw this offering aged exclusively in Woodford Reserve barrels. This is noted for the 2012 December Release, but will not be seperated out.

Tap in a snifter at Village Tap during CCBW. Menu has it listed as Straight Jacket aged in Woodford barrels. It’s dark in the beer garden but from what I can see its a glassy hazelnut brown with garnet hues. Tantalizing aroma of brownie mix, fudge, and sugar. Taste is sweet and rich. Agave nectar up front with whiskey, and a candied hop finish. Pretty nice. Golden brown sugar flavors linger. Medium body. Very sweet but not cloying. Yes, please.

Bottle pours dark amber with one finger bubbly head. Very nice aroma of sweet malts and bourbon. Taste matches aroma with barleywine malts and just the right proportion of bourbon with some dark fruits as well. Unassuming finish with no bitterness. Didn’t get much oak at all. Palate thick but not syrupy. Nice alcohol burn.

Overall a great barrel-aged barleywine. It’s very sweet so it won’t be to everyone’s taste, but I really enjoyed it.

Bottle shared by TheAlum in the GTMW ticket line...thanks Adam! - Pours clear amber with a tiny bubbly head. Nose is caramel sweetness, butterscotch, and a little grassy hops. Taste is nice mellow, sweet butterscotch, with a real malty warm finish. Slick and medium-bodied with low carbonation.

Bottle shared in the GTMW ticket line, pours a dark amber with an off white head and some sticky lacing, the aroma is pretty sweet with some of the alcohol coming through, nice chocolate notes coming through as well though, the flavor has a nice caramel front end with dark fruit and bourbon in the finish, the oak adds another layer of vanilla and sweetness to it as well, really smooth and well done.

Thanks Adam M for the bottle. 2012 (woodford barrels) edition enjoyed at 60F in a wine glass

A - Burnt amber hues, light head fades fast

S - I can smell sweet booziness on the pour from 2 feet away. Loads of very sweet nectar of bourbon. Drank some Woodford Reserve before pouring this and there are a lot of similarities in the sweetness, oak and coconut.

T - WOW. This is something really special! It is a very sweet beer but the oak, smoke and brown sugar balance it out. There’s a toffee taste with hints of caramel and vanilla sweetness at the finish. This lingers for a very long time after finishing.

M - Decent carbonation on the mouth swish, heavy body...heavy swish leads to a cotton candy taste

O - This is a fantastic beer! Not my favorite barleywine bt wow.

22 oz. bottle shared by our friendly neighbors at DLD 2013. Just labeled "Straight Jacket." Pours a hazy amber color without much head at all. Bourbon, caramel, brown sugar, dried fruits, honey, and butterscotch. Sweet. Medium-bodied, with a malty mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Big sweetness masks the booze. Tasty beer.

On tap, and labeled as Straight Jacket. Pours a deep, dark ruby color with a half finger of head. Had aromas of toffee, cherry, grape, plumb, and I got a bit of yeastiness as well. This beer is boldly sweet, tad bit of a hop bite, and slight alcohol burn. The alcohol is very well masked in this one. Really full bodied, and had a very thick mouthfeel. Lingering dark fruit aftertaste. I dug this one.

Dec 2012 bottle. Pours a hazy amber color with a foamy white head that doesn’t leave great lacing. Aroma is very bourbon oak forward with a sweet toffee notes as well. Flavor is very delicious bourbon but you are still able to pick out the sweet caramel, dark fruits, and malt notes. The end is very astringent with bourbon notes almost as if this is more than 13%. Mouthfeel is sweet full and carbonation is average. Overall this is an absolutely delicious beer that I would buy any time.

Bottle shared at RBWG. Clear dark amber, thin tan head. The aroma is boozy, brown sugar and roast malt. The flavor is sweet, smooth, alcohol. This would age nicely I think,

On tap at gammon coach house labled as Straight Jacket. Drank from a snifter. Pours a dark ruby with a half finger of head and nice lacing. Aroma is very boozy and winey. Absolutely amazing. It smells as if I’m drinking a glass of merlot. Taste is delicious. Red wine, plum and YEAST. Very sweet. The best barley wine I’ve had to date.
