In November of 2010, we filled 1 Jack Daniels and 1 Heaven Hill Rye Whiskey barrel with our Barleywine (Institutionalized). The combination of these two unique barrels yield a very rich and complex finished product. Deep aromas and flavors of dark stone fruits, bourbon, molasses, toasted coconut and vanilla come in waves as you swirl this beer in the snifter.

Future releases, especially the first bottle release saw this offering aged exclusively in Woodford Reserve barrels. This is noted for the 2012 December Release, but will not be seperated out.

Bottle... This beer rocks!… Pours lightly hazy and burnt-orange with a tiny, fleeting, white head. The aroma is a malty collage of coconut, vanilla and bourbon accompanied by toasted oak and caramel malts. Full-bodied with a velvety mouthfeel and lazy carbonation. The flavor is a rich melding of Caramel, vanilla, toasted oak and buttery toffee. Boozy, caramel and coconut finish. Another world class beer shared by the one, the only, the ever-generous newcigarz! I’m really digging the bottles coming out of Revolution. I look forward to more of them.

A sweetish barleywine made even sweeter with the barrels. On par with other sweet bws.

Sampled at a bottleshare, bottle labeled "Straight Jacket". Vanilla nose, very nice. Wood, bourbon-barrel evident. Clear light brown color. Big body. Light smooth, creamy carbonation. Dry finish. Taste is bitter sweet. A light but very welcome boozy warmth. Good earthy hop, some light fermented fruit. Awesome barleywine. Nice amount of warmth to it.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2012 Sampled at the brewpub. Pours a hazy brown with a bit of an amber hue and a yellowish tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma is sweet with grains and caramel backed by sweet barrel and a hint of fruit. Flavor begins with sweet grains and is joined by caramel and vanilla as well as a hint of bourbon.

Bomber shared by Ryan - thanks. Goddamn, this is killer. Murky orange pour with a minor head. Sweet rich caeamel and wood. Like, crazy style. This is amazing.

My Bottom Line:
Rich caramel malts and their residual sugars slowly sink through the tongue, reaching soulful depths with their vanilla and dark fruit ramifications.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam tops the cloudy dark amber or pale red.
-Alcohol is not a bother at all, giving some warmth only in the second half of each sip.
-This brew’s mmmmhh factor is sky high.
-The barrel-aging job is intelligent; never brash but rather precise throughout.
-3rd Year Beer and this one are obvious proof that this brewery is to be taken very seriously in any very malty endeavours they undertake.

Bottled in Dec. ‘12, as Straight Jacket Barley Wine.
