A play on Josh’s name, this Russian imperial stout is aged in four different types of bourbon barrels (Old Fitzgerald, Old Forester, Elijah Craig, and Evan Williams), then blended for the resulting thick and dark brew. If you had a chance to taste Alderaan, this is the aged version.

Bottle: thanks, Jason! Deep brown, very close to block with a khaki colored head that’s quick to foam up; nice & frothy as it slowly settles to a thin film & ring around the glass. Aroma has some notable whiskey up front with a multigrain underbody; notes of wood, dark cocoa nibs, light roast, & a hint of delicate syrup. Alcohol presence is large on the nose... Taste is similar with a big kick up front of tannin-heavy oak that’s been soaking in bourbon & whiskey for a long time. Light cocoa, slightly charred, with mild notes of coconut (likely from the barrel aging). Brown sugar & faint maple syrup come out with warmth, leading to a wood & whiskey filled finish. Lightly astringent. Despite the boozy presence, it never gets too overbearing. Certainly a slow sipper, though. Would like a thicker, more "round" mouth feel, but it’s quite tasty.

From a trade with rxeight-thanks man! Black pour, medium viscosity for the style, pretty high carbonation. Lots of bourbon elements on the nose, vanilla, oak, some booze, along with dark malts and coffee. Taste follows...pretty standard only stout, not complex but tasty. B+ just needs some more body to push it up.

Vanilla, sweet chocolate, caramel and bourbon on the noise with a coffee brown head. very drinkable with a good amount of carbonation. Vanilla and bourbon on the tongue with a bitter chocolate Finish that lingers around. You get the alcohol earth on the finish as well. Good beer for a cold night

Bomber. Pours a stouty, opaque brown-black, smallish espresso colored head with so so retention, good lacing. Nose is cocoa, brown sugar, hint of vanilla, whole lotta barrel. Mouth is medium sweet and sticky, thick and chocolatey, dried fruit (dates and figs), some vanilla, roast, boozy goodness. ABV is sorta hidden, but this is cold right now. Perfect beer for this Siberian-esque Chicago evening, with the mercury dipping well below zero, howling winds and enough snow to make even the most hardened Midwesterner reconsider moving to somewhere like... oh, I dunno... Hawaii.

22 ounce bottle poured into a brandy snifter. Pours a thick, viscous black with a decent sized head of tan foam. The aroma has notes of vanilla, booze, some fudge, maybe a little Oreo. Taste is sweet, chocolatey, and boozy. As it warms, more vanilla character comes out. Big bodied with lower carbonation. Thick mouthfeel.

Bomber from ck1 for our family Xmas gathering, thanks bro! Pours an opaque black with a tan head leaving very little lacing. Aroma has chocolate and caramel and vanilla/bourbon with a solid roasty presence. Taste is of bittersweet chocolate, some sweet caramel maltiness, some roast/ash and some vanilla. Smooth with a terrific flavor blend. Surprisingly, the alcohol is understated. Full bodied. Finishes bittersweet with a little kick. Tasty, smooth and excellent. Very enjoyable!

Sadly I only got a four ounce pour of this as the keg kicked just as they were filling my glass. On the plus side that meant I didn’t pay a dime for a fantastic imperial stout. Revolution is making some good products and this one is no exception. One of these days I hope to make it there and try their beers at the source.

Aroma / Appearance - An oily black base slides around the glass like melted charcoal. Vanilla, anise, chocolate, and thick creamy textures hang in the air. This is as dense as you would expect a well crafted imperial stout to be.

Flavor / Palate - Dark fruity notes stick on the tongue. Chocolate, anise, and coffee emerge at the peak of the throat. The finish lingers with a pleasant bitterness typical of a malty profile. This is excellent although perhaps just a notch below the best of the best. I’d put this against any number of other Midwestern releases - check it out for yourself.
