COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A play on Josh’s name, this Russian imperial stout is aged in four different types of bourbon barrels (Old Fitzgerald, Old Forester, Elijah Craig, and Evan Williams), then blended for the resulting thick and dark brew. If you had a chance to taste Alderaan, this is the aged version.

UPDATED: NOV 9, 2013 I don?t get much aroma but the flavor is huge. Chocolate, cherries and bourbon. It?s like dessert in a glass. Becomes a little bitter as it warms. I preferred it on the cool side. I?ve never had anything like it. Outstanding!

Black, tan head. Aroma of Bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, caramel. Chocolate flavour, alcohol, light sweetness, umami, wood. Finish raisins, malts and chocolate. Nice!

At Rich’s Massive Cellar Emptying Tasting. Revolution deth’s tar -pitch black with Stan head and a dark cacao and umami nose. Medium bodied, sharp carbonation. The taste is black licorice, savouriness and bitter dark chocolate. As I’ve noted am not a licorice fan but this is pretty good.

Bottle @ Drink Rich’s American beer, thanks to Omgrich. Brune foncée, col fin beige. Arôme offre un gros bouquet malté aux notes chocolatées, et léger de vanille qui se prolonge assez bien. Palais est malté, chocolat, caramel, petite note de pomme-candy avec un profil de Bourbon fortement bien placé. Vanille et boisé offrant une fine note épicée-douce qui laisse ample place aux malts mais aussi à la complexité des barriques. Fort agréable sans être certain que jouer sur tant de barriques apportent franchement bcp au final si ce n’est l’effet ’wow’.

Chicago reunion hang with Dave & John. Shared by my ol’ buddy Dave. Opaque, near black body with a quarter inch of beige head. Sweet bourbon and vanilla aroma. Oak and chocolate with alcohol heat emerging at the last instant. Quite tasty.

Shared bomber bottle by a friend. Poured a pitch black colour with a non lasting tanned ring. Notes of dark roasted malts, dark sweet chocolate, sticky sweet bourbon notes, oak, toffee, lots of spicy bourbon notes. Some dark fruits and raisins when it starts to warm. Full bodied and sticky mouthfeel. ratings should be way higher on this site. If you like bourbon stouts. You need to get this one!!

Deth’s Tar ’14 Yields a viscous black color with a small brown head, leaving back alcohol legs. The aromas reveal a decent amount of fiery, wooden Bourbon, paired with fresh brewed coffee and burned malts. Coffee acts as the centerpoint of the nose, illustrated by scorched earth, a hint of hops and vanilla infused Bourbon. As for the coffee, the aromas mirror the taste. Bitter, earthy coffee beans blend very well into the wooden, biting oak, accompanied by toffee and caramel. As the Bourbon hits the tastebuds, the beer turns suddenly sweeter and hotter, tied together by floral, honeyed vanilla, with old wood and rock sugar in the finish. The boozy bite of the beer gets easily balanced by the prominent, earthy malts. This drinks almost as smooth as Bourbon County, while providing a well accentuated coffee earthiness all the way. Has a present, warming Bourbon presence to it, which turns a tad too hot in the sweet finish, overwhelming the previously established coffee foundation, while it remains its scorched, roasty qualities.

22 ounce bottle. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of malt, bourbon, chocolate, and coffee. Taste is roasted malt, bourbon, chocolate, coffee, and some vanilla. Excellent.

Sample at the Jackie O’s Staff Bottle Tasting Part 1 on 04/11/2015. Pitch black pour with a medium thick foamy dark beige head that recedes gradually to a film. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, bourbon and chocolate. Full-bodied with flavors of roast malt, oaky bourbon, dark chocolate and a bit of coffee. The finish is mildly boozy with a bourbon and malt aftertaste. Solid beer all around.

My Bottom Line:
This memorable Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout develops medjool dates within its generous vanilla bourbon discourse, leading to an expressive and highly satisfying sipping experience.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the pure black.
-Alcohol heat is present throughout, but doesn’t bother the vanilla-laced profile.
-Bourbon barrel is quite present, as it seems to be with most Revolution barrel-aged beers, but it fits in perfectly with the grain bill. As it seems to do with most Revolution barrel-aged beers. ;)
-The slick mouthfeel is very elegant despite this beer’s heft. No obesity here.

Bottle... Pours tar-black with a mid-sized, creamy, fat-bubbled, khaki head. Great retention. Smooth bourbon and tobacco in the aroma. Full-bodied with a velvety mouthfeel and modest carbonation. The flavor is mainly just hot, acrid, acidic, sour mash whiskey. There is some dark cocoa here, but every other component is completely muted or dialed-down a couple notches and replaced with that red-hot bourbon. Burnt bitter acrid finish. This was in my cellar for about a year. If I still had a bottle, I would revisit this again in about three years - maybe only two. It’s not flawed in any way. Just a little wet behind the ears.
