A striking, robust porter full of warmth and chocolate malt. Eugene is a robust porter named after Eugene V. Debs, an American union leader and activist who led the Pullman Railroad strike in 1894. An assortment of Belgian specialty malts form a complex structure of toasted grain and caramel flavors. Dark chocolate malt makes this porter black as night and infuses it with its distinct intense, chocolate essence.

12oz can poured into a shaker. Aromas of coffee, grass, and caramel come through as well as a floral touch. It pours a dark, opaque caramel brown color with a tan, even, small-bubbled head. A thick ring with a sudsy surface is retained and a messy lace is left on the glass. The taste is a medium sweet and light bitter combination. The oily beer has a medium malty body with a soft and sudsy carbonation. Coffee, chocolate, figs, and plums come through on the palate with a floral, herb, and spice finish. Clean and fresh chocolate and grass notes stick around in the aftertaste. Overall, there’s a noteable spice note that stands out (for a porter).

5oz pour at the Revolution brew pub pours a translucent, deep brown with some cloudy, white head. Nose has lots of roasty notes, mild coffee, burnt toast, pencil lead, some chocolate. Flavor is malty, molasses, heavy toast, some coffee, a little dirt, some roasted mushroom. Dry finish.

A can I picked up at the South Loop Binny’s in Chicago as part of make your own mix 6-pack for 10$. 6.8% It pours pitch black with a beige head of foam that leaves spotty lacing behind. Served in a snifter it has a sweet savoury chocolate aroma with hints of smoked honey glazed ham. Medium to full bodied with a fairly smooth mouthfeel. The taste is meaty dark bitter chocolate, a hint of smoked ham, very savoury and sweet with a mildly roasty semi-dry finish. This is really nice.

Dark cola color with half finger of khaki colored head. Smells of bakers chocolate, anise, tea. Taste is a mix of the chocolate and anise, with a earthy roasted malt, cigarette ash, vanilla. Slick mouthfeel, slightly acidic, low bitter. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap @ the brewpub. Dark chestnut brown. Chocolatey roasty profile; sweet dark chocolate, mocha undertones, roasty bitterness. Enjoyable.

One of the first Revolution beers that I got into, and still a go-to porter for me. Review from can. Deep cocoa brown to black with tan head. Very satisfying slickness to the mouthfeel, without being too cloying. Plenty of hop bitterness to balance out the powdery, bakers chocolate notes. Manages to be simple and complex at the same time, a local standout porter.

12 oz can courtesy of Josh. Thanks. Pours a dark brown with a big clumpy khaki colored head that has good retention. The aroma features sweet grains and toasty malts. The taste was mild chocolates and sweet mocha set in a very earthy malt base. The palate was very thin for a porter and the carbonation was lively. The finish was medium in duration and sweet. Overall: OK, but ... there are better porter options out there.

Nutty mild chocolate aroma. Deep brown pour with a thin tan head. Mild coffee in the taste with a Hint of cocoa powder. Nice soft carbonation that goes down smooth. Slightly woodsy hops to finish.
