A striking, robust porter full of warmth and chocolate malt. Eugene is a robust porter named after Eugene V. Debs, an American union leader and activist who led the Pullman Railroad strike in 1894. An assortment of Belgian specialty malts form a complex structure of toasted grain and caramel flavors. Dark chocolate malt makes this porter black as night and infuses it with its distinct intense, chocolate essence.

Iíve never had anything from these guys, and Iím always up for trying new brew. Can poured into a chalice. Pours a thick deep black, with just a sheet of lace on the top after what I thought was an aggressive pour. Bits of lace cling to the glass. The nose is full of roasted goodness: ground coffee, chocolate malt, toasted bread, and a kiss of sweet vanilla on the finish. Good hefty body. Chewy but easy to drink. Good bubble play on the palate. Big milk chocolate flavors all over this beer. Some mild roastedness rounds it out a bit. Iíve had far too many Porters that are heavy on the roasted aspect and it just wears on you, but this one is perfectly balanced, even erring on the side of a little more sweet. Some vanilla and almond noted as well. Really a stand out beer here. Were this available to me locally, I think Iíd have regular stock of this in my fridge as my go-to dark beer.

Can pour into nonic pint glass from Julioís Liquors. Appearance is dark brown with mahogany tinge, no discernible sparkle, finger-width foamy light brown head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is strong toffee, roasted malts, mild chocolate and vanilla. Taste is sweet roasted malts with mild chocolate, dark fruits, late roasted bitterness. Palate is medium bodied with thin, creamy texture, lively carbonation and mix of sweet and bitter roasted malts. Overall, not as chocolatey as advertised but nice nonetheless. Better as it warms.

Can from VE. Nose sweet and dark, lightly scorched with sweet caramel. Pour brown that accumulates to black in the glass, foamy light brown head. Taste heavy chocolate with light-medium mineral character, faintly airy, excellent persistent low bitterness with good hard roast, light sweetness that also persists, flourishing red berry. Lightly tart, smooth and slightly creamy, full but not fat body. Malt a little straightforward but this is a drinkable, classic porter. [2016.09.14: 3.4]

Non Beer Trip Beer Trip Beer #25. 12 ounce can, 3/8/16. Dark brown, large foamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of strong roasted malts and clay almost bordering on bandaid. The taste is chocolate, cherries, roasted malt, caramel. Thin bodied, low carbonation. Disappointing.

Dark coffee/copper color, clear, tall, tight foam with no lace. Aggressive barnyardy nose. Medium body, moderate flavor, refreshing and well balanced mouthfeel, good carbonation and heat, avg length, clean aftertaste. Moderately bittersweet, refreshing acidity. Coffee, malty. Pleasant, easy drinking but not exciting. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
