3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at the brewpub -- notes from April 7th, 2011.
Pours a clear, rich copper color little bit of a wispy white head that leaves bits of lace there and about. Nice malty aroma with a little touch of molasses; modest leafy hops; Flavor slightly rich, malty, brown sugary, not too rich (actually pretty judicious), modest leafy hops, wet grain kind of flavor, not dry like their bock was. A bit of warm alcohol comes forth as it warms, seeming to exaggerate its modest 6% ABV rating. Medium-full bodied palate, finishes with a malty, leafy, tobacco-y aftertaste.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear, deeper copper colored body with an inch thick, creamy, beige head that dissipates slowly and leaves a moderate lacing. Aroma is light with some fruity, slightly toasted grains and a hint of caramel sweetness. Flavor is fairly sweet and bready with some more toasty grains and a bit of a caramel. A touch of herbal hopping comes in at the end to somewhat dry this, but it does finish a tad sweet. Medium length aftertaste following a medium-light, smooth body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, an easy drinking, fairly straightforward marzen. On the sweet and bready side, but it was enjoyable enough.

on tap at revbrew...similar to baphomet in appearance...flavors are gentle grains with medium bitterness... somewhat light bitter flavor with a sweet grainy
backdrop. a touch too sweet overall. Not a favorite and would take a pass the next go-around

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a nice near transparent coppery hue, reddish with a distrinct glow, sun tea, with a moderate offwhite beige head that dies to a thicker film, laces ok. Aromas are mellow sweet caramel and toffee, some toast, biscuits, bread, a bit sweet overall. Sticky almost on the nose, not spice or bitter hops. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, offering up a plethora of caramel and toffee, with toast, some sweet toasty bread, biscuits, more toffee. Touches of crackers, biscuits, some light touches of florals, grass, faint spice. Overall, this is sweet and a bit of an undertaking, a bit thick without the drinkability and yeasty spicy dough I was expecting. Sweet malts tend to dominate with som carmelization, light toast, light bitter florals, not spice really. Not a Marzen I’d prefer over many others. Where’s the lighter body and sweet/toast clash? Where’s the spice? The light bitterness and toasty lightness? Hmmmmm. Just not very good, too sweet.

2.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
Ugly sort of clear copper... dead nose, a caramel and bread, boring... equally boring taste, caramel, very watery... disappointing

3.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft at Revolution. Pours a deep coppery-gold with fast dissipating head. Nose is quite full of melanoidins, light caramel and a strong grainy note. Smells pretty spot on. On taste, it kind of falls apart. Quite herbal and bready with an alcohol sweetness to it that begins to distract by the end of the glass. I’d wonder if this under-attenuated. Alright, just misses the mark. I’ll stick with the Bock.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft at rev. Pours red with off beige head around the rim. Not a very aromatic beer, some honey, red fruit, and toasted grain. Flavors are rather sweet, caramel, honey, mild toasted malt with grain husk finish. Like most rev beers it suffers from being too heavy and finishes too sweet.
