UPDATED: JUN 6, 2010 Draft at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a pretty much pitchblack opaque pour, dark and ominous snifter with a very large khaki head, laces well and cakes. Aromas are a hefty dose of sweet lactose and cocoa, light coffee and roasted malts come in behind, with caramel and smoothed out vanilla, sweet oats, and more creamy lactose sweetness moving in. Initial is medium bodied, a bit nitro’d perhaps, with sweet vanilla and lactose up front, roast and coffee with a touch of ashyness moving in at the backend. More cocoa up front, a touch of caramel, but sweet and bitter chocolate are prevalent, lactose creamy sweetness and a touch of vanilla. Earthy coffee and roasted malts really grow on the backend, making this a sweet stout that balances back towards roast on the backend. Smooth and silky, lingering roastiness and coffee grounds, quite a well balanced sweeter stout in my opinion. Tasty indeed. Probably the 2nd best "Sweet Stout" in regards to overall taste, balance, appearance, palate that I’ve ever had. Really surprised a Sweet Stout (which by nature, is lactose dominant) has such a roasty earthy coffee lingering finish. Very nice beer! I still give the nod to Depth Charge, but this is a great Sweet Stout.

Draft taster, June 7. Deep black, with a thin head. Smell has some light chocolate, but the taste goes much deeper to cocoa country. Warming alcohol gives this an impression of a chocolate cordial. Overall impression is sweet, with a bit of roastiness and hoppiness in the background.

Bottle on Amtrak Train 27 - The Empire Builder ( from Binny’s South Loop) - 04/11/12. Mid black with a frothy head that clears to the edges. Nose comprises roast malt, chocolate, molasses, liqourice, touch of smoke. Taste of milk chocolate, roast malt, a little hops. Alcohol well disguised for 7.5% ABV! Medium bodied with soft carbonation leading to a roast finish. Decent milk stout.

Bomber from beer frig at lake...pours black with nose and initial taste of chocolate and coffee...thin tan head with nice lacing. Sweet and smooth...a little thin for a typical stout but creamy overall / smooth taste make up for it...smooth and tasty.

Taster on tap at the brewpub. Clear red brown color. Thin off-white head, kind of cream colored. Leaves great thicker lace. Nice milk chocolate, mild roast, mild earthy herbal aroma. Moderate sweet taste, but not cloying or sugary. Mild bitter taste, good earthy hop balance. Medium body. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. Light slick finish. Nice sweet stout. Well-done.

Bottled. Dark brown-red with a large, bright white head that is slowly yet mostly diminishing. Malt heavy aroma is rich of roasted malt, bittersweet cocoa, molasses and mild coffee. Lightly sweet flavor with pin pricks of roasty bitterness. Extremely light carbonation, and the lactose is noticeable in the slick, lightly creamy texture. Finish has notes of bittersweet chocolate and light rye bread. A straightforward sweet stout, well made and a good representation of the style. A nice change from the imperial stouts flooding the market.

Pours dark with a good head retention that was khaki brown in color. The aroma is of lactose milk sugar, some roasted notes, and chocolate. While tasting I noticed a creamy mouth feel with a good body. There were flavors of sweet milk sugar, roasted dark malts, some caramel, hints of chocolate malts, and minor prune fruit tastes. Overall the finish is very good and the beverage was kind to my palate. This is one of the better milk stout that I have had.

UPDATED: NOV 4, 2012 On tap at Revolution. Dark black pour with a thin head in a tulip glass. Nice nose of roast and chocolate with some of that lactose. The roast and bitterness balances out the sweetness well overall. Overtime it gets to be a little too sweet. But a solid milk stout for sure. 7/4/73/15

22 oz bottled version. The lactose is still a little too much. But the roast and chocolate balance it out well enough. Not too sweet. It works decently well 7/4/7/3/7/15
