3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Treebs (733) - , Illinois, USA - MAR 10, 2013
Had on tap at the Revolution tap room. Served in a snifter.
A: Pours a dark black color with dark brown highlights. A tan head forms on the pour and recedes to thin ring. Some splotches of lace are left down the glass.
S: Light bourbon, some oak and chocolate. Roasted malts with mix with a caramel sweetness.
T: Same as the nose, but very smooth. The bourbon mixes with a decadent chocolate and some milk chocolate sweetness. Roasted malts with some oak barrel and subtle vanilla.
M: Medium bodied with a medium low carbonation. Velvety and smooth.
O: Very good and a nice smooth barrel compliment to the already delicious Eugene porter.
Serving type: on-tap

On tap at Kedzie taproom. Pours black with dark tan head. Aromas of sweet vanilla, bourbon, and chocolate. Flavors of bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, and roast. Wonderfully sweet and complex. Base beer held up great to the barrel. Might be my favorite from Revolution so far.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 crossovert (4772) - Wisconsin, USA - NOV 17, 2012
Aroma and flavor of black tea. Was expecting coffee but this has a strange flavor and scent to it.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 dinkle50 (732) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - OCT 6, 2012
Thin head with aroma of oak, vanilla and bourbon. Mouth is thick and syrupy. Taste is full of chocolate and vanillca. A hint of bourbon. Super tame. This is a great take on Eugene.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Dunt (221) - Illinois, USA - OCT 3, 2012
Sampled on tap at the brewpub. So happy this is finally back! It was my favorite beer by Revolution until I tried BA Baracus, but I was too lazy to review it last time through. Mean Gene pours a pitch black color with only the slightest toasted marshmallow colored ring around the glass. The pour is all the way to the lip of the glass do there is no head formation. Nose doesn’t open up too much upon first sniff, but as it warms it becomes nice and rich. Heavy barrel character without being overpowering, oak, bourbon, caramel, a little brown sugar, and vanilla. It kinda reminds me of creme brûlée a little. All the same themes prevail in the flavor with a little bit more chocolate peeking through. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, maybe a little thin, low carbonation, faint booziness, velvety smooth, and finishes long and pleasant. This beer is dangerously drinkable and I would and will not have any problems polishing off a couple snifters of this. Revolution really knows their way around a barrel.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Brigadier (2275) - Bloomington, Indiana, USA - AUG 20, 2011
On tap at GTMW (2011)
Regretfully in the rush of the mid afternoon I missed out on the Pablo Picasso release. This was a good consolation later though. A robust imperial porter the base stood up well to the extra aging process. The result was a blend of vanilla, bourbon, smoke, malt, and straight black coffee. The roasted oak finish left a bitter touch on the throat. Thick and chewy this was the ideal partner of beasts such as the various BCS treatments, Dark Lord, Dark Knight, and other huge beers being poured all around the park.

On tap at GTMW. Poured deep brown with a lovely, tall, dark beige head. The aroma was sweet and bourbonny upfront, over well-roasted (near-burnt) black patent and molasses.. sweeter chocolate undertones.. great balance! The flavor found warm, burnt black malts cut by milkier sugars and vanilla.. sweet bourbon and toasty oak laced throughout.. solid balance, but not quite up to par with the nose. Heavy-bodied and well-carbonated on the palate.. I really enjoyed this!

Sampled at FOBAB 2010 on Nov. 6. Black with a beige head. Lots of bourbon richness. Bourbon chocolate. Thin flavors lots of bourbon but a good blend. 8/4/8/3/15

On tap at the brew pub...A dark brown pour with a light tan head, good retention and great lacing...A very sweet aroma of all bourbon and vanilla, a touch to sweet for me. Stunningly similar to BCS, more than a few couldn’t tell the difference between the two...The taste is way interesting as not surprisingly it is sweet, but not how you would think. The bourbon and vanilla are replaced by sweet and creamy milk chocolate, and the finish brings back the biting bourbon and vanilla. So complex, loving it...A wonderfully viscous lip smacker.
A super unique combination in taste and play off the aroma. Reminds me of an easy to drink aged BCS. You can tell he worked at GI. Drink this beer.
