Our first lager beer is brewed to the classic German style. Back in the day, brewers released this stronger beer to celebrate the start of fall brewing after hot summers. Now that we have high-tech refrigeration systems we brew all year, but still enjoy drinking Oktoberfest as the temps start to cool.

Draught pint at The Looking Glass in Janesville, WI, October 12th. Poured a dark somewhat brackish amber with minimal head, though some could be created with a bit of swirling...at first almost not aroma to be ascertained, just a dry husky leaf-like character; with several minutes a bit of caramel malt does come through and some resin...much the same experience in the mouth, with just a dry, dusky and bitter nothingess, but again it improves fairly dramatically with a few minutes sitting, and just enough sweetness comes out, and the ending dryness becomes less harsh. Medium-bodied, fairly strong carbonation. One of the better arguments I’ve experienced recently for not serving too cold, this I would have rated in the low 2s after the first couple of sips, but it became quite drinkable (if not among my favorites in the style by any means) in 15 minutes.

Tap at not sure where I am. Fine copper pour. Nose is faint caramel and toasted malt. Tastes of toast, malt, caramel, earth, hint of currants, some sweet Apple to finish. Fine for style

Orange amber. Fruity orange malt with hops. Flavor is fruity toasted malt and balanced hops. One of the best Oktoberfests I’ve had in awhile.

Nice head, but more of an amber rather than traditional red (personally for this kind of beer, I prefer traditional). Aroma is caramel malt and hints of toast and hops. Flavor’s similar to nose, on sweet side, good carbonation. Body’s a bit thin. Good enough finish. An ok Okfest.

Amber nutty oktoberfest. Very good. Medium body, a little American hops. Sweet, nutty, earthy

A bit hoppier than usual for style but a nice nutty Oktoberfest is hard for me to turn down. Good stuff.

Bronze color with a taller ecru colored head. Some hops aromas (a touch citric) and hint of caramel and toasted malt. Light sweet flavors. A bit nutty and some floral hops mixed in. Not real clean, not toasty and refreshing, I’m quite certain if a brewery in my fatherland were to bring this one to market there might be a revolution. 10/12

Draft at Dark Horse, 11/17/15. Great win by my Terps! Clear orange color without much head or lace. Nice malty presence on a small hop note. Average carbonation. Solid beer.

Nice pour, orange yellow with small thin head that went away after a sip. Malt, hops, alcohol, barley, corn, yeast in the aroma. Taste follows, very balanced. Nice hop and pine presence, balanced well with sweetness and a bitter aftertaste. Nice

12 oz can, poured into a shaker pint at ~40 degrees F. Appearance: Pours a beautifully clear dark-honey amber, and forms a massively fluffy slightly off-white head that leaves lacing on the glass just by diminishing. Smell: Glazed doughnut with pepper sprinkled atop, Taste: Thick bread, sweet caramel, slight hints of toffee, white and black pepper, vague suggestions of earth and wood oils. A bit of a floral tinge at the finish. Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium, and sharp. Overall: I enjoyed this marzen. I would drink it again.
