Bottle. Poured dark brown color with an average tan head that mostly lasting with sticky legs and excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy sweet chocolate and tosted rye aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted dark sweet flavor with a medium to heavy dark sweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a good smooth brew that exceeded my expecations.

hand pump at the brewery. expected low carbonation with a small fine-bubbled brown head. robust, layered, striking nose of starchy grains, char / black patent / burnt grains with abundant chocolate and cocoa roast. medium body and rigid malt texture. rich, robust, full-flavored and awesomely balanced front to back.

Sample at The Daily Growler. Pours a nearly opaque brownish-black color with a medium beige head that dissipates slowly to a film. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Medium body with a roasty character and flavors of dark malt, coffee and subtle rye. The finish is chocolate malt with a touch of spicy rye left behind. Above average overall.

On tap at the brewpub. Poured a cloudy brown head with a brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had a combination of chocolate, roasted malts and rye with just a bit of molasses. Flavor started with roasted malts and rye with a bit of chocolate balancing the finish.

22oz bottle, bottled 1/25/13. Medium body. Soft, moderate carbonation. Kind of dry. Dark clear brown color. Minimal off-white head. Few dots of lace. Toasty malts. Light chocolate, coffee in the nose. Little burnt malts, some herbal earthy hops / tobacco notes. Light coffee. Sweet taste, light bitter. More on the sweet side. OK stout, good amount of hops (though not as much as was in Rise). I’m just not really into the texture.

Tap at Revolution. Very dark pour with a nice white head. Aroma is roasted malts, licorice, and mild chocolate. Smooth palate. Taste is an easy drinking roasted coffee with a touch of chocolate. Delicious.

Black body with tan head. Toasted rye bread, tobacco, dry chocolate, deep roast aromas. Frothy light mouthfeel. Dry chocolate, burnt grain flavors with some pale maltage--decent

Growler shared by Alex. Thanks! Pours a nice darker murky dark brown pour, dark and brooding with a small brownish head that dies to a film, laces small. Ruby dark tea bottom and edges. Aromas are rye malts, chocolate, roast, and toast. Some more bakers cocoa, some coffee, creamy sweetness but firm roast and toast. Coffee starts to assert itself. Initial is medium bodied, with good roast and toast, a subtle carbonation with some coffee, cocoa, and rye. More cocoa, caramel, and toffee. Touches of toast, and roast. Cocoa, touches of rye, faint spice, dry roast comes into play. Finish is some sweetness, dry roast, toast. Some rye, cocoa, lightens up bodywise into the backend. Solid palatable stout with a touch of a twist, good flavors. Perhaps it suffered a point due to "old growler" feel.

Bomber to oversized snifter (shared with the Mrs.). Looks good for the style; a dark cola with foamy beige head that dissipates into lacing. Smells solid; dark malt, chocolate, roast, and a bit of spice. Tastes like it smells with a good mouthfeel and a nice light rye tingle. A good spin on the style.
