3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 TheEnemy (562) - Chicago, USA - DEC 7, 2011
On tap at the brewpub, 11/3/2011. Pours dark brwon black like a stout ought to, but there’s not much head head and it that fades away quickly. Bubbly carbonation like you’d find in a pilsner; haven’t often seen this in a stout. Aroma is straight-up American IPA; piney, floral, light grapefruit; only a tiny bit of roasted grain comes out. Flavor starts out much as the aroma suggests, then the roasted grain shows up more in flavor as it sits on your tongue; in essences, it fades from an AIPA into into a stout, Tingly palate is a bit thin and clunky. I don’t care much for this new "black IPA" trend, though this is one of the less obnoxious of the examples I’ve tasted.

Draft at Revolution. Dark brown, thin tan ring, slight lacing. Orange and chocolate nose, bit of manure, high roast dryness accents all of this nicely, very well put together. Flavor less vibrant, more orange and chocolate, light earth, empty finish, carbonation a bit high, stinging roast bitterness throughout. Balanced for the most part, nicely dry despite fruit refresher.

Had this on draft at the brewery. Citrus nose, super dark pour with a light head. Lots of lacing. Creamy mouth. More hoppy than roast. Slight roast finish gives it a real nice touch. Nicely done, but I question if this is a stout.

On tap at Revolution. Black pour with a tan head. Hop and dark roasted malt aromas. The taste follows suit with the addition of some caramel and baker’s chocolate..
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Pailhead (3859) - Brownstown, Michigan, USA - NOV 11, 2011
On tap: The aroma pine, grapefruit, and light chocolate. It’s a dark brown with no transparency and a small beige head that leaves a nice sheet of lacing behind. The flavor starts with a quick dose if chocolate. The finish has notes of pine, roast, and grapefruit. Medium bodied with mild carbonation. Overall, more Black IPA than Stout.

On tap @ Rev. Pours black with a tan head. Heavy hop aroma of pine, citrus, and a touch of chocolate. Nice hop profile in the flavor, citrus, bitter. Balances well with the chocolate malt, very solid beer.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Pawola22 (3103) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - NOV 9, 2011
On tap at Revolution. Pours a black body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing throughout. Aroma is really nice. Lots of roasts, piney citruses, chocolates, and some char. Flavor is similar and just as nice. Lots of burnt roasts up front with plenty of citrus pines. Chocolate comes in and picks up slightly in richness towards the end as the burnt roasts come out more and more. Pines keep up with roasts and have a really nice citrus alongside them as well as lots of pleasant florals and tobacco. The finish is dry and bitter, but very well balanced with lots of roasts, char, pines, resins, citrus, and a light smooth chocolate. Lengthy aftertaste with lots of roasts, resiny pines, and tobacco following a medium body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, an excellent Stout/Black IPA. Tons of dry hops and burnt roasts with a light, but very pleasant chocolate malt. I really enjoyed this one a lot. Very well done and bold.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 TheAlum (4289) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - NOV 4, 2011
Draft on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Excited for this one. Pours a rich roasty blackish hue, near opaque with a touch of ruby on the bottom and edges. A frothy brown head sits atop, dies to a small layer and laces ok. Aromas are a plethora of dry hops, florals and grapefruit meet resinous pine, roast, touches of toffee, more hops. Fairly hop forward and dry. Initial is medium bodied offering a heavy hop presence up front, resinous pine and florals meet a boatload of grapefruit, dry roast and toast meet some gentle cocoa, touches of bready and biscuity malts. Middle shows dry and bitter hops, touches of creaminess and toasty roast. Really nice, hop forward, almost a creamy vanilla essence in the middle. Finish is roast, toast, lots of lingering hops with that touch of creaminess hanging on. Lots of hops, bakers chocolate, roast, yet not a very big body. It’s a hoppy bomb, but still quite drinkable. Very nice, kinda that Stout/Black IPA hybrid feel.

Tap at Rev. Awesome, just awesome. Close to Alpha Klaus, beautiful roast, so ashy, bit of plum, fantastic pine, spruce, resin, tobacco, another winner. Rev has stepped it up!

On tap at the brewpub. Pours black with a small creamy tan head. Aroma is whoa hoppy and biting dark chocolate and burnt roasty character. Surprisingly piney and some citric fruitiness in there too. And the flavor is even more aggressively hopped, very citric and piney, I picked up notes of pipe tobacco and roasty notes and chocolate in the finish. Medium to medium full body and a soft carbonation. I dig it, but as has been said, very much on the black ipa spectrum....
