Our first real hoppy stout that tastes a lot like what people are calling Black IPAs these days. This is an American Stout that features both roasty and hoppy characters from Roasted Barley and dark Caramel malts plus Cascade and Galaxy hops.

Dark brown pour, light brown head. Flavors of molasses, hops and a dry stout. Tastes like shoot Guinness foreign extra stout.

A black ale, big roast, not that much of the hops except in a bitter finish. Good taste and decent drinkability. I get this kind of thing in trades.

651mL shared at Congregation Azusa. Pours black with red highlights. Weak foam. Nose is hoppy black IPA style with dank hops, roast, tar, meat, olive. Taste is dusty, ashy moving to some buttery chocolate, hazelnut, slick dairy, coffee with creamer. Strange, maybe some diacetyl is in there but taken over by hop content.

A lot better than the average black IPA. This one you can tell was a more well-produced recipe. A lot of hop flavor in this one, really fruity.

On tap at GTMW. Poured deep brown with a creamy, dense dark brown head. The aroma picked up a lot of spicy pine over toasted chocolate malts.. fresh and engaging. The flavor found toasted black malts with lesser chocolate at the core.. a lot of pine and sprucey hops around and through the finish.. tasty stuff. Medium-bodied and quite bitter on the palate.. moderate-plus carbonation.. nice balance.

On tap at the Kedzie location. Pours black with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges and laces slightly. Aroma has a good amount of roast with coffee and a backing bitter chocolate note supported by grassy hops. Flavor has roasted malts and coffee with a really nice grassy hop note in the finish.

22oz bottle, shared. Bottled 11/1/12. Dark black clear color. Little brown head. Decent lace. Good chocolate and earthy hop nose. Nice coffee in the flavor, works. Some herbal. Surprisingly bigger body, good crisp carbonation, dry texture. Solid bitter taste. Very nice hoppy stout.

Bottle dated Nov 1 2012, received Aug 2013.   Got about 13 months on this baby.   Nearly pitch black, dark cola hues, moderate frothy beige head, spotty lacing.   Dusty nose of pale milk chocolate, hops, and even softer roasted malts.   Dusty and ashy up front, pale roast, very old chocolate, with an aftertaste that really reminds me of caviar, cod caviar to be exact.   Great on rustic bread, but in a beer, somewhat odd.   They call this a Black IPA, I don’t get much hops.   Does have a slight pasture aspect that I wish it didn’t have.   Almost a fresh cut grass aspect at times.   An odd duck for sure.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Very stale chocolate on the exit, slight pasture, weak hops, with a touch of caviar.   Could be the age on this one, 13 months from bottling date...   At least those that wait on this now know what to expect ey?   Seems like a Foreign stout aged witih a Dry stout at times.   Thanks Kevin for the bottle.
