Our first real hoppy stout that tastes a lot like what people are calling Black IPAs these days. This is an American Stout that features both roasty and hoppy characters from Roasted Barley and dark Caramel malts plus Cascade and Galaxy hops.

Pours dark brwon black like a stout ought to, but there’s not much head head and it that fades away quickly. Bubbly carbonation like you’d find in a pilsner; haven’t often seen this in a stout. Aroma is straight-up American IPA; piney, floral, light grapefruit; only a tiny bit of roasted grain comes out. Flavor starts out much as the aroma suggests, then the roasted grain shows up more in flavor as it sits on your tongue; in essences, it fades from an AIPA into into a stout, Tingly palate is a bit thin and clunky. I don’t care much for this new "black IPA" trend, though this is one of the less obnoxious of the examples I’ve tasted.

On draft. The beer is a very dark brown with a thin tab head and tons of lacing. Aroma is coffee, cocoa, mild citrus, and bits of sweet cream. Taste is rich dark chocolate, coffee with cream, sticky dark malts, and hints of slight citrus flavors drifting in and out. It’s not really enough to be noticeable though. Palate is thick and sticky and lingers. This is a tasty beer.

Black pour with a three finger, creamy tan head that has great retention. Aroma is citrus and berry hop notes, some toast, pine, a little roast, toffee, mild nutty notes and a hint of char. Flavor is sweet chocolate, toasted nuts, roast, sweet citrus, pine, some fruity esters and light metallic notes. Medium body, slightly syrupy entry, medium carbonation, dry, slightly syrupy finish. Good stuff overall. Nice, hoppy stout.

This beer is a brownish-black color with a medium foamy tan head that diminishes gradually. Patchy lacing on the glass. The aroma is roasty with malt and coffee notes plus some chocolate. Medium body with flavors of roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee and hops. The finish is charred malt up front with a mild hoppy aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Smells hoppy, fresh, roasty. Taste is clean hoppy roasty malt. Bright yet rich. Kind of a hoppy dry stout. Pretty good.

Bomber from Puerto Rico Food & Liquor in Humboldt Park. Pours very dark brown with a light brown head. Coats of lacing, that reduces to spots and streaks. Aroma has roast, chocolate and molasses. Later down in the glass, pine and some citrus show up, but this has a heavy roasty/choco smell. Bakers chocolate and rich roast lead the flavor, with sweet caramel, touches of vanilla and molasses plus some tangy pine. Medium bodied with some alcohol presence. Finishes more to the bitter side of bittersweet, with some tangy-ness. This is not black IPAish - stout all the way from the components, and better than anticipated. 14.7

A black ale, big roast, not that much of the hops except in a bitter finish. Good taste and decent drinkability. I get this kind of thing in trades.

Bottle from chickeni3reast. Black pour with a lasting dark brown head. Aroma was in your face hops with some roasty coffee notes in the background. Flavors were also quite hop forward, lots of citrus mixed with bitter malts. Nice creamy palate with perfect carbonation. Finish is bittersweet with a lots of hops that linger for days. A really good hoppy black ale if you're into that kind of thing.
