On tap. Woody aroma with plenty of bourbon. Big bourbon flavor with a touch of caramel in there as well. Not bad.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
5 oz sampler on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a nice dark brown hue, good murkiness, some more amber like edges that glow a bit in the light. A cakey tannish brown head pretty big sits atop, laces well. Aromas are sticky sweet and tart plums, bigger sweet malt presence of toffee, caramel, toasty bread and biscuits. Some wet oak comes into the fold, vanilla tannins and a touch of Bourbon spirit. Tart on the nose, overall. Initial is medium bodied offering up tart plums initially, moving into sweet toffee and caramel, wet oak, Bourbon spirit with a touch of heat. Sweet and sticky, thinned out by the barrel though, and tarted up by the plums, this gets a bit bitter and hot quickly into the backend. I like the tart plums up front, but then the beer gets a bit undesirable fairly quickly with heat, a substantial dose of oak and spirit warmth, sweet sticky malts cling as best, despite being thinned. Plum tannins and oak, bittered up well in the finish, almost a bit harsh. Ok, a worthy experiment, but the initial tartness gets killed off by a harsh finish. Meh. Glad I only got the sample as I could not finish this. Finish just doesn’t work for me.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft, pours dense ruby red with beige head around the rim. Aroma is loaded with vanilla, wood, earthy and tart plums and brown sugar. Flavors have tart plum beginnings but then things get messy, muddled caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, and a strong stale boozy finish. Booze and a hint of plum lingers on the palate. Flabby mouth feel. Starte off rather promising.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Murky dark brown, much darker in the middle, a light tan ring... Weak aroma, a little lactic sourness, a little dark fruits... Taste has a bit more going on, sweet dark fruit, alcohol, a little oak, slightly sour, a lot going on but not integrated... Ok

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft at Revolution. I wonder if I had the same beer that Drew did? Poured an ugly yellowy brown with soft carbonation. Murky. Nose is nice, light tart fruit notes, chocolate, light caramel, light vanilla. This has a finessed barrel character. On taste, the acidity from the plums works really well, pulling in the sweetness. Alcohol is quite subdued. Again, the barrel character is solidly interwoven. Carbonation is good. Nice and rounded balance. Good beer.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Snifter pour at revbrew... Pours a somewhat ruddy reddish toffee brown with a thin quickly retreating light beige head... Aroma is bourbon barrel forwardness with tinge of tartness on the backend. Some vanilla tannins interspersed... Harsh and muddled, excessively boozy in the flavor with lots of residual hit running down the throat. Semi-tart overall. Body is a tad bit thin. Snifeter is tough to get down. Thanks to Monica for being able to help me with this.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the brewpub. Pours a murky dark brown colored body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, darker tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is pretty solid and well rounded. It doesn’t jump out at me, but it’s balanced and pleasant. Up front it has a light plumy tartness and a nice bourbon barrel-vanilla. There is also a light caramel sweetness, a touch of peaty earth, and a light woodiness. Flavor is similar and everything is well integrated and balanced. A light plum tartness up front with a soft and subtle barrel aged note. Medium sweet caramel malts offer a pleasant sweetness to balance. Some vanilla-wood, a touch of peaty earth, and a hint of acidity. Finishes sweet with a solid blend of barrel-vanilla and a light tartness. A tad dry and the alcohol does present itself a good deal in the aftertaste, although I didn’t really notice it until I felt the heat in my chest. Lengthy aftertaste following a very soft and smooth, medium body and a light-moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty solid beer. I liked the barrel aspects and plum tartness alongside a fairly sweet base. The alcohol was a bit distracting in the aftertaste, but it didn’t affect the flavor at all. This was balanced, rounded, unique, and enjoyable.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at GTMW (2011)
I missed a couple of the Revolution special releases (as always happens with so much good beer and so little time). This one though I made sure not to miss. The result is a decent and confusing beer that can’t figure out its identity. Part plum, part bourbon, and part malt each part vies for attention in a messy brown base. The outcome is that in the end the plum loses out. Still this was a nice way to start the festivities.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
I really like this beer. Draft. Pours cloudy brown with a tan head. Aroma of sour fruit, caramel, vanilla. Slightly sour, little bit of wood in the flavor, dark fruit. Very easy to drink. Great beer. Wise I could have brought a growler home.
