Pours very darj red-black with small off white head. Aroma has coffee grounds, raisins, smokey. Flavors have some astringent coffee grounds, smokey grain, dark fruit, touch molasses. Med body. Pretty good take on the style, seems a tad astringent with dark malts. Enjoyed at first but became a bit much hard to on the palate.

this poured a medium to dark brown color with a beige head. Aroma was of lightly roasted malts, and earthy herbal hops. Flavor was a bit off and astringent, with mild roast, some caramel, and grassy Hops. Ok.

Tap. Poured dark brown color with medium brown creamy off-white head that mostly lasted with fair lacing. Medium roasted dark malty and hop aroma. Medium body with a dry texture and soft carbonation. Medium flavor of roasted malt bittersweet with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Interesting solid brew.

Big mug at the taproom on Kedzie. Poured a dark brown with decent off-white head. Smell is clean and of roasted malts. Aroma is complex: along with the roasted malts, there are also hints of charred wood, chocolate, anise, earthy hops, and toasted bread. Taste is sweet at first with a more bitter finish. Medium body and creamy mouthfeel Very drinkable. A well-done schwarzbier I hope I get to try again.

Draft at Rev Taproom. Pours near black with off white head. Nose is super clean with some nice roast and toasty malts, faint herbal hop. On tasting, firm bitterness with a good depth of malt. Super clean overall. Fresh and light roast, herbal hop finish is distinct. Medium light body. Really nice schwarzbier here!

Draft on tap at Bavarian Lodge (Lisle, IL). Revolution Tap Takeover Event. Pours a richer deep blackish pour, not opaque, some body haze and darkness but the edges preach a brownish red glow, some deep reddish ruby notes. Cakey brownish head atop stays as a firm layer, laces ok. Aromas are roasty and cocoa, some anise and kiss of dark fruit. As I adjust, more roasty malts, biscuit, and toasty breads. Gentle earthy hops, a creamy sweetness beneath. Dark cocoa, some anise, roast seem the mode here. Very nice, still dry and roasty but some hommage to the darker base. Initial throws a lighter end of medium bodied element, firm drinkability. Immediately cocoa, both bakers and some hints of sweeter chocolate come into play. Dryness, gentle roast, some anise and dry earthy hops. Middle gets the sweeter element in, toffee and caramel, some sticky elements, biscuits. Toast, toffee, a touch creamy, some pretzel. Backend is gentle dryness and roast returning, some sticky firmer dark malt elements hang on to linger, play well. A lot of elements get thrown in the fold, good flavors, gives a little girth, a touch sweet at times for me where I’d like a little more dryness and roast. Overall, it’s a pretty nice offering.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a very deep brown, mostly black body with a bit of a reddish hue around the edges. Aroma has a nice roast and earth note up front with a light lager fruit, clean pils malt with a light sweetness, and a light chocolate. Flavor is similar. Light earth and roast throughout with a light chocolate, pils malt, touch of toast, and lager fruit. Finishes dry and clean with a light roasty bitterness and touch of malt sweetness. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium-light body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, a really solid example of one of my favorite styles. Very easy drinking with a nice roast and earth presence along with a clean yeast and lightly sweetened malt backing. I could drink this all day.
