On tap at the brewpub. Pours a deep brown colored body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, light brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is juicy, sweeter citruses up front with a sticky pine resin and a bunch of florals. Rich toffees and caramels behind the hops provide a really nice balance. Touches of toast and a light chocolate that comes out a bit more as this warms. Flavor is similar. Lots of sticky, resiny, juicy citrus pines with a bunch of florals up front. Hops remain in the forefront throughout as a nice toffee and caramel malt comes in to balance. Touches of toast and chocolate at the end as this finishes fairly dry and bitter with lots of citrus pine resins and a nice malt presence. Lengthy aftertaste with just a slight alcohol warmth following a medium-full, sticky body and a soft, creamy, moderate carbonation. Overall, I’m really digging this. Lots of sticky pine resins and a solid, somewhat toasty and sweet malt balance. Great beer.

On Cask at the 6th Annual Winking Lizard Cask Ale Festival on 3/22/14. Clear reddish brown in color with a thin beige head. Aroma of malt, caramel, orange, cherry and pine. Malty flavor with a caramelly sweetness before a pine and strange sesame finish.

From tap. Pours a rich, dark brown. A good sized white head. Smell is licorice and cherries. Some sherry notes. Bready. Starts sweet, moves to bitter. Cherry notes throughout. The abv shows. Clings to your cheeks. Call it a brown ale if you want, but this is approaching imperial stout territory. Bitterness fades as it warms.

Cask version at Winking Lizard’s 6th Annual Real Ale Fest (03/22/14): Deep dark brown color with a medium beige head that recedes gradually. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops, chocolate malt and citrus. Medium to full body with flavors of citrusy hops, caramel malt and pine. The finish is moderately bitter with a resiny hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

Draft. Cola dark-brown body with medium beige head. Aroma is medium sweet, caramel, but, light herbal. Taste is sweet, caramel, some nut, orange, booze. Sticky medium-full body.

Old raring. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of citrus, caramel, chocolate. Strong beer, can definitely tell it is 9.5%. Fairly sweet.

Draft pour on tap at the Milwaukee Ave Brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a richly deep brownish amber pour, honeybrown hues dominate, just a bit of haze. Darker middle trails out to glowing copper amber edges and a mellow frothy head dies to a mellow ring, laces ok. Aromas are brown malts, dry earthy brown malts, gentle sweeter caramel, toast carmelized malts take a good big hold. Some dry citrusy and earthy hops, florals, gentle dryness grows. A bit sticky as it’s bigger. Initial is big but richly hopped, almost a hrash dry bitter hop swoops in very unexpectedly. Dry and bitter, grapefruit, some lemon, florals. A bit piney, some resiny qualities. Dry and bitter, medium bodied offering. Quite resiny and hop ridden into the middle and backend. Some weed, rich grapefruit, and resiny qualities. This beer completely transforms. A big hop presence makes those earthy, brown malt blues fade away. Backend shows toastiness, carmelization, a bit of thickness as that huge grapefruit rind-y and floral hop presence becomes more accustomed on the palate. Finish is a bit toasty, sticky, brown malts. But that huge hop presence for the style remains. The nose was a bit deceiving, the beer delivers some intensity.

Draft at the 3rd year anniversary party. First beer of the party. Poured a deep brown-black with a tan head. Nose is resiny, some citrus and black malt. A bit harsh and grainy, some fruity esters as well. Noted alcohol. On tasting, it is harsh. Dry and grainy. Big bitterness and citrus that clashes with the dark malt character. Would have liked more caramel in there to balance it out overall. Not horrible but far from great.

On tap at brew pub. Fantastic brew! Aroma of roasted rich caramel malts, big piny and orange mango grapefruit hops, slight coffee and chocolate. Beautiful dark brown, slight ruby hue and a sticky creamy cream colored head. Tasted amazing and hits in three phases - 1 big citrus hops, 2 rich roasted toasted caramel, 3 smoky bitter chocolate and coffee. Feels great. Overall this knocked my socks off, cannot wait for the barrel aged version!
