Ridgeway produce two versions of Bad Elf "Winter Ale" - one at 4.5%, and the other at 6%. There is a separate listing for the 4.5% version.
Olde England meets the New World in this strong, warming golden ale, brewed by Peter Scholey. Master brewer for the late and much-lamented Brakspear Brewery of Henley-on-Thames, England, Peter started his own brewing operations in 2003. Bad Elf is a hop-lover’s dream, balancing a generous amount of famous English malt with an astounding 45 ounces of fresh hops – including American Cascade – per barrel.

From the bottle, pours a mostly clear orange yellow with a thin white head. Sweet malty aroma, a little corn. Thin taste of light malts and corn, bad kind of bitter, flavor actually degrades into the aftertaste. Light for a winter ale. Not my favorite.

Bottle. Pours hazy brass color with small rocky offwhite head. The aroma is spicy and fruity hops with a bit of orangey esters, green wood, and that kind of laundry detergent that’s supposed to make your clothes smell like flowers. The flavor is assertive hops that are woody and spicy to begin with and get fruitier through the mouth. It has a sort of orange peel quality to it, kind of citric and tannic at the same time. Some ripe peach, nectarine, and red onion notes pop up from time to time. The finish transitions quickly into an apricot-like sweetness. Drinkable.

7 jan 2012, bottle. Light gold, clear, steady bubbles. Very light caramel malt aroma. Already unimpressed. Full body and faintly fuzzy. I wouldn’t call this a winter ale. Medium sweet and lightly grassy hops. Actually decent. Like a sweet English bitter.

Dull hazy amber pour, fluffy white head. Aroma of earthy, spicy hops, along with toasted malt. Flavor is more of the same - much more! Abundant hops are very smoothly blended into the toasted malt base producing big flavor yet somehow not overpowering. A tightly woven tapestry of aroma and flavor.

Light med gold clear pour, thin head,a bit of lacing. Smells like a grainy light lager with some english, light sweet malt, very subtle hops if any. Light sweet grainy malt taste with pronounced englishness,ok hop flavor and a citrusy lemon finish with the bittering. Really dry finish almost astringant. Ok beer. I thought it was going to be a winter warmer, till i read further thinking it was a hoppy english pale ale which is the case. With a simple grain bill which it probably has the bittering tends to seem more bitter than alot of ipa’s.
