Pours dark red almost black. Slightly metallic taste, roasted malt coming through, little hops. Doesn’t finish very well. It’s ok

Actually a nice beer. Poured with a smallish light tan head and some lace. Aroma is dark malt roast dark pipe tobacco, coffee dark cocoa. Flavor is like aroma very well-balanced between bitter sweet and tangy super easy drinking beer. Excellent body. Like to have more of these. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Sainsburys. Appearance: very dark ruby red, tiny brown head. Aroma: copper, grain, pepper, a little smoke. Interesting. Flavour: tobacco, smoke, bacon, pepper, hint of chocolate, woody. Long chocolate and bacon finish. Weird but good.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s. Deep ruby with a small cream head. Interesting taste. There are some definite popcorn notes in there. Also toast, some fruitiness and a little spice. Fairly tasty.

Bottle from sainsburys. Opaque black ale with a short lived head some particles in the ale. Nice aroma of smoky liquorice. Taste is slightly sweet and bitter. Advertised as a ’black ale’ so will forgive it a slightly thin body.

On cask at Churchkey, pours a watery amber with some sudsy, white head. Nose has some caramel apple, candy, a little spice, mild nail polish. Flavor is lightly sweet, some apple, some nail polish, cotton candy. Watery finish.

Bottle at home. First beer from this brewer for me. Dark brown with a thin fading to nothing pale grey head. Aroma of treacle toffee, wood, smoke, coffee. Bit thin and drank like a mild!

Meanwhile, differences in quality between Sam Smith and Ridgeway just don’t seem to register with beer geeks, who don’t understand English beer in the first place, and won’t generate any excitement for it that might get noticed in the mainstream. (I wonder how much whiskey-infused stuff the geeks are buying now, by the way.)

The best I’ve had of the lot of these Ridgeway beers. Dark brown pour with no head or lacing on cask. Roast malt and nice thick consistency. Creamy texture. Dry bitter leave. Cask at Churchkey.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s, Derry [020414]
Dark ruby brown, clear, beige head, some lacing
Aroma of dark fruity malts, slight cinnamon, bit spicy, dark caramel malts, touch of soft roast, dab of dark chocolate
Taste of dark fruity caramel malts, some soft roast, touch of dark chocolate, some hedgerow fruits, hint of blackcurrant, nice dark malts, quite complex, good flavour
Palate - soft carb, medium body, oily, smooth texture, quite sweet. Finish as main flavour, smooth rich dark fruity malts
Overall - Really good stout
