(Bottle) Pours dark brown to black. The aroma is quite doughy with notes of sour berries. Undertones of blackberries, liquorice, dark chocolate, tar and coffee. The flavour is of mild salt liquorice, some coffee roast, bitter hops, tar and dark berries. The mouthfeel is soft and round. Light sweet and medium bitter. Medium bodied.

500ml bottle at home. Chilled by accident and didn’t want to wait for it to unchill itself. So maybe I don’t get the full range of flavours here. Still, pours a promising dark colour with some nice roasted malts, figgy hints, grains but nothing overbearing.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured from 500 ml bottle.
Opaque, brown-black with a small khaki head and fair lacing.
Aroma of dark fruit, roasted malt, figs, plums, grain, nuts and a hint of chocolate.
Taste of roasted malt, dark fruit, figs, sour cherries, chocolate, nuts, grain and roasted coffee.
Light/medium body and medium carbonation with a thin mouthfeel. The mouthfeel is so incongruous with the beer's impressive flavor that it distracts (and detracts) from the enjoyment of the beer.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Black mild ale, no head. There’s only a small roasted malt aroma with a similarly light roasted taste that includes a sweetness about it. Its strength is not evident.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle bb 07/11/14. Pours a fairly finny coca cola colour. It looks just like coke, the colour and carbonation. Aroma is toasty, a little sweet treacle. Medium body, medium carbonation, a bit sticky. There’s some dark toffee, toast, rye bread, maybe a touch of lemon. It’s OK.

Not so bad after all. But not a stout. On the bottle it says it is an English Black Ale ... not sure what that means, but it seems a bit more like a Dopplebock to me than a stout. Poured a light brown (clear) with a small fizzy head. Malty aroma, with a decent mix of malts and hops on the tongue. A bit watery and not at all stout-like. Tasted good tho’ and when I bought it I wasn’t thinking it was a stout. I kinda think this is mislabeled as a stout here on RB.
