500ml bottle (bottle conditioned): best before 17 Feb 2013, poured into my Abbot Ale glass tankard 9 Apr 2012. Looks good: tan head on an exceedingly dark body. The nose and taste are a great blend of dark chocolate, liquorice, bitter coffee and burnt prunes. Not rich in body but flavoursome and interesting: a fine brew.

As much as I wanted to love this beer (who can resist a beer named Bad King John with jousters and a comely lass on the back label?) I found that there was a burnt tire aroma that put me off. Not terrible mind you, but enough to not give it as high a score as I imagined.

500ml bottle, 11/05/13. Opaque, brown-black. Pours good, brown head; good lacing. Med carb. Aroma - Good, roasted grain, bit choc, faint fruit, slightly ashy. Nice roastiness. Rich, dark malt. Bit spicy hop. Bit fruity alcohol. Nice. Taste - Rounded, dark, tasty, roasted malt - Bit sweet, but also some good dryness. Rich malt. Good, dark fruit flavours. Bit choccy. Bit winey alcohol. Med bitter, spicy, English-tasting hops. Good balance. Med body, light creamy malt body, bit tangy / fizzy on tongue. Light bitter, spicy hop finish, with nice, lingering, rich roasty & light sweet maltiness. Rich, roasty & delicious. Good drinking.

Bottled. First of all, this beer is awesome! I have had already several bottles in the last months. The aroma is dark chocolate and coffee. Exactly my style of a stout. Refreshing yet full aroma and flavor. Nicely balanced stout!

500ml bottle. Clear dark brown color. Thin bubbly tan head. Little lace. Mice roasty malt, light coffee flavor. Good light dark chocolate note. Light to medium body. Light, smoother carbonation. Just a bit watery. Light bitter taste. More sweet in the finish. Some cola flavor. Decent black ale.

This a really old ale, well done, smells like dark chocolate with medium body, nice head, a little watery, taste is dark "dry" chocolate, good to start in the topic of intense beer to identify dark chocolate notes in complex beer and I love full british bottles so generous ml wise, well balanced but no surprises
