Commercial Description:
Ridgeway FES bottle matures in a similar way to vintage port. Roasted malts and leaf hops initially provide an aroma of breakfast coffee and fresh spices that gradually fades to reveal licorice, caramel and raisin notes that are products of the ageing process. Beneath all this change sits a solid and resilient backbone of bitter English hop. Satisfyingly foreign. You might even imagine the glow of the peat fire?

Poured a deep but not opaque black with ruby highlights. The head is a thin beige cap. The nose is mild with roastiness malt dark fruit and vanilla. The taste starts somewhat sweet like a chocolate covered raisin with underlying roastiness and a lingering finish of dark chocolate and earth. The alcohol really never rears its head very easy to drink albeit a bit mild compared to many other of the style.

Pours a brown color with some amber tint and a brown head. Aroma is roast, coffee, chocolate, a hint of dark fruit, caramel, and a touch of floral earthyness. Flavor is chocolate, brown sugar, roast, caramel, some plum, and a bitter floral spicy finish.

Draught at TND: Aroma of dry, roasted malt and slight chocolate. Poured dark brown/ruby/deep orange/deep amber in color with a large, creamy, rocky, tan head that diminished but lasted throughout. Clear. Sparkling. Good to very good lacing. Flavor is lightly sweet and slightly bitter. Tastes of roasted malt, slight licorice, slight caramel, slight chocolate, and hints of dark ripe fruit and wood. Medium body. Smooth, slightly dry texture. Soft carbonation. Roasted malt and slight chocolate finish is slightly dry. 8%ABV is totally hidden throughout.

[Bottle at the Good Food Show 2009, NEC, Birmingham] Deep brown-black with a slight creamy head. Cough mixture, coffee, treacle and smoke. Quite sweet, and gets a bit sticky - I was glad I shared the bottle as I would struggle to drink a lot of this. Not bad though.

Dark black with a dry stoutish feel. Complex combinations and well disguised alcohol. Nice but a little bland.
