COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ridgeway FES bottle matures in a similar way to vintage port. Roasted malts and leaf hops initially provide an aroma of breakfast coffee and fresh spices that gradually fades to reveal licorice, caramel and raisin notes that are products of the ageing process. Beneath all this change sits a solid and resilient backbone of bitter English hop. Satisfyingly foreign. You might even imagine the glow of the peat fire?

(Cask at St. Urho’s Pub Portteripäivät’13) The beer poured deep dark brown. Its head was small and white. Aroma had sweetness, roasted malts, berries and alcohol. Palate was full bodied, oily and dry with low carbonation. Flavours were sweetness, roasted malts, burnt malts and bitterness. Afteraste was roasty and bitter. A bit weird and too sweet.

Brown beer, small beige head. Nose is roasty, slight acidity, malt, fruity notes, some metal. Flavor is roasty, chocolate, mild hops, spice notes. Lovely hoppy-roasty finish, slight acidity in the roast. Feels a bit thin, but not distractingly so. Hides the booze remarkably well. Pretty nice.

I suspect this beer I tried was beyond its peak freshness. Pour was exceptionally flat at flavor had strong oxidation (metallic taste). Aside from that it was nice with chocolate and sweet alcohol flavors.

UPDATED: SEP 27, 2015 Bottle @ home. Pours with a pitch black colour, small off-white head. Aroma is very rich in roasted malts, coffee and some slighr notes of vanilla and licorice; some hops too. Taste is slightly sweet, quite bitter, very slightly sour; balanced stout-like, a little bitter. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Very good stout.

Black colored, small non lasting tan head. Aroma is chocolate, licorice and roasted malt, touch of alcohol when warmer. Taste is medium sweet chocolate, licorice, coffee, hint of alcohol with a roasted dry finish, bit of roasty bitterness but not much. Slightly warming. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, milky. Very drinkable for an 8% brew!
