3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle 330 ml from Le Grain d’Orge - Crissier (CH). Coppery beer with a fugacious head. Malted aromas, alcohol, dry fruits, apricot-orange jam, hops. The taste is soft, sweetened and syrupy, with a citrusy bitterness. Thick beer with a voluptuous sweetness, very sweetened and a bitterness low balanced, alcohol-liquor of bitter orange.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bière blonde ambrée avec un très léger col de mousse. Nez floral, miel et alcool. En bouche, l’alcool est très présent, malt et miel, faible carbonation, amertume moyenne. Pas mauvais mais c’est loin d’être imperial ...

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle 330ml vintage 2012 (WPBF)
Clear golden color, small white head. Alcoholic, green apple, some grainy aroma. Medium-bodied. Alcoholic, grainy, light fruityness and grassy hoppyness. A bit too weak malt base for "real barley wine". Now turns a bit more like a good malt liquer. Burning alcohol in the aftertaste.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Mysterious brewer this one. And I do like the vintage export label so kudos to that. But hit & miss with the brews this just seems another to that list. Orange marmalade, bready toast and caramel sum up the nose. For a ten percenter I did expect some heat. Oily, vinous, citrus driven palate. Drying, warming swallow with a low bitter apex. Could well be a glass of fortified Verdelho, which gives it a few uppances. Carbonation is a mere fairy touch to the palate so it yields a port-like viscosity. Malts are well consumed; light graininess lingers, a touch of damper-like, unleavened bread preludes each sip. The sticky citrus conserve and white wine preserve is gripping making it quite alarmingly slipping. Zero as far as complexity, but then it is aimed at being a classic English barley wine. I didn’t mind it, but uncellared is about as good as it will get I guess. (33cL, lot 381, b. no. 7051, 2012 vintage, Cellarbrations Carlisle)
