Mediocre English barley wine but still hit the spot on a cold night. Thin corona, golden body. Strong aroma of bitter oranges, plus butter and bread. Flavour dominated by Cointreau and alcohol. Minimal hop presence - almost verging on malt liquor territory here. Sweet and boozy. Guilty pleasure for mine - I like it more than the overall package probably warrants. (330ml bottle from Leura Cellars.)

2012 bottle. Clear amber with an off white head. Aroma of dried peach, quince, mandarins, bread, sherry/ white "port". Sticky, low carbonation. Very sweet. Grain, bready, dried peach, dried mandarin rind. Some mandarin/ orangey bitterness and it does dry out a bit but the sweetness just grinds on. OK, could have used some acidity.

330ml bottle present. Hazy amber brown, not much head. Sour resin barley aroma. Barley sugar flavour. Watery with sickly sweet aftertaste. Not my thing.

Bottle. Pours a clear golden body with a small white head. Nose is pale malts, grains, mild boozy notes, maize, hints of bread and straw. Taste is pale malts, alcohol, red berries, mild caramel and hints of bread. Medium body and carbonation. Terrible barley wine, really.

Bottle:Deep golden, small - but stable and lacy - white head; a touch of alcohol in the sweet pale-malty (to honeyish) nose, a bready touch detectable; moderate sweet flavour, some subdued bitterness detectable, medium bodied; sweet pale malt, alcohol and shy hops in the warming finish. Quite an easy-drinking barley-wine…

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein minimal trübes dunkelgoldenes Bier mit geringer Schaumkrone. Geruch sehr malzig süß, holzig, Dörrobst, alkoholisch. Geschmack sehr malzig, fruchtig, süß, Honig, holzig, leicht alkoholisch brennend.

(bottle, 33cl) Slightly hazy, deep golden colour with a short and slightly tanned foamy head. Slightly molassy malty aroma with notes of dried and candied fruits, also sourish, slightly vinous fruity accents, caramel and fusels. Sweet and delicately bitter flavour, full bodied with a soft carbonation. Caramelly malty taste with lighter fruity and mildly spicy notes, sweet malty and delicately bitter finish with floral, if not perfumed notes retronasal, a touch of booze and caramel, as well as traces of caramel in the aftertaste. Strange and slightly unclean BW, but still a likeable brew. 05.VI.14
