COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Any porter requires complexity of malt and yeast flavours without excessive bitterness. We use a mixture of Maris Otter variety pale ale malt, pilsner malt, crystal malt, amber malt, black malt, roasted barley and malted oats. Porters, even imperial ones, are not a hop driven style of beer so the aim is to produce a simple clean background bitterness using traditional varieties like Challenger, Golding and Progress.

Dark, almost black beer with a medium minus beige head. Aroma is roasted but a bit watery and sweet coffee. Mouth feel is round and soft. Body is medium. Not much bitterness. Some roastiness. It’s got sweetness but not too much. This is a pretty balanced and soft beer but it is not too complex or adventurous for an imperial porter. This would be great with beef or lamb I think.

Bottle. Hazy dark brown color with no minimal head. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts and coffee. Roasty taste with banana and nuts. Dry, sticky feel. Slightly bitter finish.

0,5 l bottle from Alko. Pours very dark brown with a low head. Aroma is light roasted malts and some smoke. Flavor is roasted malts and smoked fish. Surprising and quite decent.

Pours black with a little beige head. Aroma of dark, roasted maltiness with notes of licorice, bread and smoke. Taste is very malty and roasty, as can be expected. Flavours of coffee, licorice and a little smoke. Initial flavours are tasty but the finish isn’t very interesting due to low hoppiness. Alcohol or other flaws in flavour don’t feature. The body should be a little fuller but other than that the palate is adequate, nicely smooth. Overall, pretty nice despite some flaws.

UPDATED: DEC 29, 2012 Bottle at home. Aroma of chocolate, dark malts, alcohol and sweetness. Black color, small light brown head disappears quickly. Taste is not so great. Watery body, weird iron taste, hint of dark malts, low co2 and musty. This is just horrible. I was not able to drink whole bottle.

50cl bottle. Bbe 01/2014. Almist black, thin head, that disappeared quickly. Aroma has roasted malt, dark fruitiness, berries and coffee notes. Flavor is roasted malt, sweetness, coffee, licorice. Light roasted, quite sweet and light bodied for this high abv. Drinkable, easy but lacks depth and complexity.

A colabrown beer with a weak and beige head. Aroma is roasted, ryebread, some fermented berries and milky sourness. Quite mild aroma. Taste of roasted malts, balanced sweetness, some berries and bitterness. Medium bodied, low carbonation, easy to drink. Quite OK, but nothing more, too humble.

500 ml bottle. Rated on 5.12.2012.
Pours a black colour with a small foamy head. Aroma of roasted malts, tar and licorice. Flavour of roasted malts, grassy bitterness, milk chocolate, tar and some licorice. Medium bodied, oily mouthfeel and low carbonation. Surprisingly good for a Ridgeway beer.
