3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Deep golden-amber color. Small but persistent head. Nice lace down the glass. Aroma is malty, caramelly, with notes of licorice and hints of soft alcohol. Flavor is a very nice malt sweetness, with significant licorice liquor character. Very sweet, but not cloying. Aftertaste is pleasant sweetness, but balanced by the dryness of the alcohol. By far the best of the Elf series!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 13/20

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
11.2 ounce bottle, 2013 vintage, label stamp says best before 16 09 23. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a clear orange/amber color with maybe a quarter inch off-white head that didn’t stay around for very long. There’s a decent amount of lacing. The aroma starts off boozy, with some toffee, candied oranges, stone fruit and some caramel malt noticeable. The taste is mainly sweet and boozy, it tastes like dried fruit (stone fruit and dark fruit), booze, and bready malt. The booziness just seems worse the longer I drink this, and unfortunately so does the overall flavor of this brew. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s syrupy and coating with moderate carbonation. This isn’t bad, but it wasn’t exactly good either. Maybe it needs more age on it, who knows. It’s worth trying once, but I likely wouldn’t buy this again.

2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
This seems to be sold as something of a novelty but what do I know. It is orange w/ a small head. Its nose is kind of spicy, fruity w/ a touch of ginger and pear. It is a bit piny and very sweet and quite heavy across the palate. I wouldn’t say this is horrible but I do not honestly see myself ever drinking it again intentionally.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from the Bottle Bank.
Appearance - amber with a thin head.
Nose - rich orange but the malt in the background has just a hint of cardboard coming from it - all the same, inviting.
Taste - orange blossom honey.
Palate - rich and full bodied with a big rich texture and and sweet but still fairly balanced finish.
Overall - it’s a big beast and it’s enjoyable.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Barley Wine? The label says English Red Ale. Anyway pours a dirty gold with no head what so ever. Aroma is super sweet reminds me of a Belgian ale. Taste, malty sweetness, caramel maybe. The booze is hidden well, Overall not to bad, I think it might be miss styled here as a barley wine when it is an ale.

2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Several samples at Cafe Amsterdam.
The appearance was a light colored caramel with a slight transparency about it. Light carbonation was seen rising at a moderate pace. A little white head was there and that dissipated fairly quickly.
The smell had a weird grainy and somewhat sweet cereal - esque quality with a sugary toffee to it.
The taste copied the smell and that had a light candy aftertaste to it.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a slight sessionability about it. 11.5%? Uhh...it didn’t seem that way to me.
Overall, I say this was a weird barleywine as I want to say that the smell seemed a bit weird to me along with the taste. I don’t think I would try this again.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
33cl bottle. 2013 vintage. Seems like basically a barleywine ale. Deep amber pour, sweet caramel notes, hint of hop spice, hot and boozy even with age. VEry sweet and sugary. Its okay.
