COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Looking forward to a depressing holiday? Here is liquid consolation. This 8% bittersweet chocolate stout is the best you could hope for in these dark times. Come to think of it, considering how bad you’ve been this year, this little coal-black gem is more than you deserve for Christmas. Concocted by the vastly talented -- though, frankly, a little too cheery -- Peter Scholey, Lump of Coal will be hitting shelves and better pubs in November 2004.

500 ml bottle. Pours ruby brown with a medium frothy light tan head that goes to a thin film and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet roasted oaty chocolate and caramel.

The flavor is sweet sugary dark fruits, roasted grainy chocolate malts with some black licorice and ashy bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation and a bit watery.

Overall, it’s overly sweet, grainy and ashy.

Malt and cereal smell and taste along with some mineral. Doesn’t even remotely taste like a stout. Light body, medium carbonation, and slight foam.

Pours dark red/brown in color. Smells like cocoa and burnt toast. Has a flavor of cocoa, and some raisin and cherry. This has a nice creamy head and avg lacing. Pretty good beer, is really like a hybrid of a stout and an ipa.

My first tasting really didn’t agree with me. I re-corked the bottle and let it rest overnight. After resting the flavor was much improved! I raised my rating by a half point.

Bottle. Pours opaque reddish black with small white head. Aroma is roasted malt, soy sauce, ground coffee, sour apples and hints of sweet licorice and campfire smoke. Taste is medium to very sweet and light bitter. Body is creamy with soft carbonation. Finish is long and mostly sweet with notes of malt syrup, black coffee, soy sauce and hints of ammonium chloride and mint. Mild, smooth and pleasant but not very Christmas-like.
