3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tasted from big brown bottle into a nonic pint glass, of course. It poured an opaque, very dark brown color, reddish at the edges, with thin and short-lived beige foam. It would kick up a new head and some lace each time it was swirled, though. True-to-style stout aromas and flavors: bready, toasty, roasty (but not overdone), dark cherries and black plums, with hints of chocolate and coffee. Medium carbonation, chewy mouthfeel and lingering complex aftertaste. Very tasty and moreish.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Shared 16.9 oz. bottle, poured to snifters showing a black/brown hue with ruby highlighting, a modest layer of brownish tan head foam, and spots of lacing. The nose was roasted & cocoa, with a bit of molasses, and dark fruit. Light to medium bodied, with low carbonation, the taste added a moderate, earthy hop bitterness. Seemed a bit washed out and oxidized, but didn’t offend as the other "secret Santa", The Bad Elf.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Poured from bottle into a snifter. Pours a dark clear brown with a small white head. Aroma consists of yeast, caramel, nuts, dark fruit, and some bitter chocolate. Taste has all the above flavors with a smoke and tobacco flavor to it. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a sticky mouth feel. It is okay.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured from bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a pitch black color with a big grayish-tan colored head. The big bubbly head has a great level of retention, slowly fading to leave a lots of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is much lighter in the roasted department then would be anticipated. It is heaviest of a caramel and malty smell with a bit of coffee and roast. Other aromas of toffee and molasses as well as a bit of vanilla and cocoa are there as well, along with a very light earthy hop smell.
Taste – The taste begins with a blend of a roasted malt and caramel sweetened nature. There is a bit of cocoa flavor that is present upfront with this flavor later being joined by flavors of coffee as the taste advances to the end. All while the coffee increases, some flavors of an earthy hop nature come to the tongue as well, and with the coffee, end up bittering the taste quite a bit more. Some sweeter brown sugar and a bit of cream join the tastes more toward the end, and with a little bit of grainy taste, leave a sorta weakly roasted/dark stout flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and chewier side with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. For the style, it is a good feel overall, although for the lack of roast, a little more carbonation may have been slightly better.
Overall – Ah… A decent brew, but really not that special and not what I would consider a dark roastad ”as black as the lump of coal you’ll be getting for Christmas” as proclaimed by the label.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Look: pours a dark black. Light brown head.
Smell: chocolate. Bitter sweet chocolate. Alcohol. Sweet makes.
Taste: coffee. Bitter chocolate. Smokey malt. Bitter.
Feel: rather thick mouth feel. Definitely a dryness to it.
Overall: ok beer. Not a big fan of the flavor. Description is slightly misleading. I feel more bitterness than sweetness.
First drank: home 12/6/14

2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
An element of sourness ere, almost like berry - the keg has certainly gone bad. Pours maroonish without much head or lacing. Light tang in finish with some sourness. Not a huge fan - this is certainly worth giving to bad kids on Christmas. Cask at Churchkey.

Interesting. A lot going on here. My grandma gave me coal one year. A lot of dark licorice.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
500 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 10/5/2012. Pours clear nearly pitch black color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, toast, dark bread, raisin, plum, fig, licorice, light smoke/char, and roast/yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, toast, dark bread, raisin, plum, fig, licorice, light smoke/char, and roast/yeast earthiness. Fair amount of roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, toast, dark bread, raisin, plum, fig, licorice, light smoke/char, and roast/yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Nice complexity and robustness of dark/roasted malt and moderate fruity/earthy yeast flavors; with a good roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and fairly creamy/chalky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice Foreign stout style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt and moderate fruity/earthy yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to drink for the ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.
