Looking forward to a depressing holiday? Here is liquid consolation. This 8% bittersweet chocolate stout is the best you could hope for in these dark times. Come to think of it, considering how bad youíve been this year, this little coal-black gem is more than you deserve for Christmas. Concocted by the vastly talented -- though, frankly, a little too cheery -- Peter Scholey, Lump of Coal will be hitting shelves and better pubs in November 2004.

Very black color with a smallish tan head which leaves light lace while it falls. Aromas of bakerís chocolate, toasted malt, yeast, hops, alcohol and citrus. Flavors were roasted malt, espresso, unsweetened chocolate, caramel, charcoal, peat and dark fruit. Not too hoppy but plenty of bitterness from the very dark malt. A tad thin but,all in all, a typical stout. I started it too cold, the nose and taste developed quite a bit as it warmed.

Bottle - Dark Brown to Black in colour; Deep Red against light. Very Malty; lots of dark chocolate, roasted malts, caramel, espresso coffee, hints of smoke and vanilla. Very Fruity; dark fruits, berries. Hoppy; slight hop bitterness. Smooth and full-flavoured. Very chocolatey. Sweet roast chocolate malty throughout with a dry malty finish. Deceptively easy drinking for ABV. Nice sweet stout!

500ml bottle into a shaker glass; served cold. Aroma: Lots of sweet milk chocolate, some caramel. It smells like a Milky Way candy bar. Appearance: Clear, dark ruby body with a medium-sized, dissipating off-white head. Light lacing. Taste: Burnt marshmallows and dark-roasted malt over a layer of sweet chocolate. Interesting! Almost like a símore. Palate: Medium bodied, light carbonation, with a medium+, mildly bittersweet finish. Overall: Pretty tasty stuff; itís like drinking a candy bar or a símore. Quite nice, quite nice indeed. Iíd look for this if it were year-round and I were in the mood for a treat.

Pours dark chocolate with a thick tan 2 finger head. Very mild coffee chocolate flavor that stays on the tongue for minutes. A very light stout but good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy

Live rate. Leftover bottle from Xmas. Pours glossy, good as black with ruby tints and a slender beige foam disappearing fast. Mildly enticing plum and blackberry and apple crumble notes on the nose; largely yeast, with a scatter of ash. Mellow and slippery with more dominant apple, blackberry and blackcurrant skin character on the palate; gentle fizz, burnt paper, charcoal, very little malt depth. Alcohol very well concealed. Lacks body considering it purports to be an 8% festive stout. Not terribly exciting but a decent enough dark yeasty English.

Received as a stocking stuffer this year. A really mild stout. The flavor was nicely crafted but not what I come to expect from a stout. More of a dark ale.

From a 50 cl bottle shared at home. Pours a dark cola with a light tan head. Aroma of toasted nuts. Flavors of licorice and coffee. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. Bitter roast finish.

500 ml bottle during the holidays (why not?). Pours a clear dark brown color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malts, some chocolate, a mild sweetness with a light earthy bitterness to the finish. Thin and watery, it doesnít drink like 8%. I wonít revisit this.

Tasted like a lemony Guinness. Good for a beer tasting event, or to share with friends, but not something I would drink a whole pint of.

Out of the bottle after a 30 minute rest. not took much to go on for the pour. Itís a stout. Off white creamy head that slowly dissipates. First smell was of cherries and sweet chocolate. Solid flavor of said Cheetos and chocolate and also got done nutmeg in there as well. Very smooth finish after a short lived alcohol flavor.

smoky and cocolatey, nice combo. Dry finish, taste of dark malt, dark chocolate, ash. Black with creamy head. Sharp, short and dry on the palate.
