Looking forward to a depressing holiday? Here is liquid consolation. This 8% bittersweet chocolate stout is the best you could hope for in these dark times. Come to think of it, considering how bad you’ve been this year, this little coal-black gem is more than you deserve for Christmas. Concocted by the vastly talented -- though, frankly, a little too cheery -- Peter Scholey, Lump of Coal will be hitting shelves and better pubs in November 2004.

50 cL bottle, thanks to Papsoe. Pours dark brown with a reddish hue and a lacing off-white head. Brett to acidic aroma. Roasted towards slight chocolate flavoured, smooth and slight alcoholic. Nice finish.

A red-brown beer with a brown head. The aroma is acidic malty from the roasted malt, but also with light notes of berries. The flavor is sweet malty with roasted notes, leading to a quite bitter end. But I find the body thin - even more so when the 8% ABV is taken into account.

Bottled. Dark rubyish brown colour, mediumsized beige head. Aroma of dark fruit, roasted malts, metal and some leather. Flavour is burnt wet & smoked wood along with some spices and malts. Also some chocolateish hints. Ok brew, but leaves a little bit sweet, could do with a bit more bitterness.

(Bottle 50 cl) Clear, reddish mahogany with a small tan head. Unusual almost vinous aroma with distinct roasted malt. Fairly full body with sweet, malty accents. Subdued bitterness in the finish. Very pleasant indeed. 160806

UPDATED: MAR 30, 2007 Bottled, thanks oh6gdx! Very dark brown, rich firm head. Chocolate and fruit fight for attention in the nose. Sweet with chocolate brandy and aniseed. Thick, oily mouthfeel, notes of blackberries. Late cocoa bitterness. Flavourful but rather bold and unrefined.

Rich and smooth stout. Very sweet with strong banana and melon. Slightly bitter and sour dry finish. Overall - perhaps a little oversweet!
